Was hesitant to invest in one of these locks. Good to see it paying off! As an aside, does anyone have thoughts on whether I can continue using this lock or should get another one? The damage is pretty extensive but only on one side. I’m not super excited about buying another one…

Congrats on the bike living to see another day!
I’d consider this a total loss on the lock, unfortunately. Treat them like bike helmets and renew after any damage.
Think of it like paying a deductible on your bike insurance, or like you’re saving $$$ on “purchasing your bike” if it helps!
I would get a new one, that one is now significantly weaker. But glad you have your bike!!!
Turn it upside down so they’d have to start over from the top layer.
I wonder if a theif sees that as an opportunity to keep going or as a sign that his tool won’t work.
If I was you I’d cover the whole thing in duct tape (or better yet, heat shrink) so that nobody would know it has been attacked yet and they would still discover how angle grinder proof it is at every other part of the lock.
time for a new lock. see if the manufacturer offers replacements on locks damaged while preventing a theft
You should see if the manufacturer has a replacement plan. They sometimes will because of this exact reason. It doesn’t hurt to ask.
Check facebook marketplace for locks
You can pick up bike locks and chains for cheap
Bring on the down votes : I have seen Kryptonite NYC for under $50 ~
Keep the lock and buy X1 Mini to compliment your survivalist lock, Andy then use both. The Mini is quite much cheaper than X1 or X3.
Honestly, I’d keep using it. It looks like the thief only got through maybe 1 or 2 mm of actual metal. The rubber coating is most of what they actually cut. I bet if you cut away the rubber, you wouldn’t see much more than scratches on the surface of the shank. I have the same lock, and the rubber is surprisingly thick. The cuts might be a warning to other thieves that this is one they shouldn’t bother with.
Also, I’m right there with you on not wanting to buy another one. I’m 90% sure there’s no replacement program. I paid like $200 for mine, and the thought of having to pay another $200 every time an asshole takes a whack at it is horrifying. Most bike lock “insurance” guarantees are borderline scams, anyway.
Consider that your extra lock, 1.5x protection!
I’d buy a slingshot and a bag of metal bearing balls and wait nearby. If I hear angle grinder, the one holding it will end up in a lot of pain. i mean a lot. Slaunching over while trying to cut it, provides a lot of opportunity for good kidney shot. It won’t kill them, but pissing blood for a month will give them enough opportunity to rethink their values in life.
It seems they only damaged the plastic/ceramic coating. I would melt plastic to cover it so no one seems it’s damaged there.
Buy another one! then you have 1.3 U locks 😉
Also, what the FUCK do we do if we see this happening? bust it out and pee on the perpetrator?!
I love to see they resisted. I’ve got a couple of Litelocks, and thankfully no attacks on them yet.
that’s gotta be satisfying
That is the problem with these locks, your 350 dollar lock is ruined, but your 200 bike is safe.
What brand and model is that lock? If it stops a grinder it’s worth whatever the cost.
