Looking to get this old Takara fixed up and back on the road. It appears the front derailer has been bent but everything else just needs cleaning and removing the old light. Anyone have experience with this model? Looking for tips on best upgrade or how to breathe some life into this one.

In my humblest of opinion, the bike looks faster without the protection on the big ring. Unless you’re banging down single track, it’s superfluous. Other than that, it’s a solid rig. I could say upgrade this or that but it probably won’t ever fail on you.
If it does, just upgrade the bits that broke and ride on.
Very enjoyable and solid entry level Japanese bike. FYI: It’s Takara. One of the many japanese bike boom brands to lay waste to the european marques that insisted on outfitting their bikes with Campagnolo Valentino and Simplex. Yours is an excellent example of quality made for the masses.
Takara was actually an American company, I believe started in Wisconsin, to take advantage of the bike boom with mostly entry level contract built bikes from Japan.
