An “ambitious” target of more than half of short urban journeys being walked or cycled within nine years has been announced by the Government.
The Department for Transport (DfT)’s new cycling and walking investment strategy sets out an ambition for 55% of journeys under five miles to be made on foot or by bike in England’s towns and cities by 2035.
The current level is 48%, according to the department.
A target of 60% of children aged between five and 16 usually travelling to school by walking or cycling by the same year has also been created.
Speaking with co-founder of the Together Declaration Alan Miller, Talk’s Mark Dolan says: “The policies of this administration feel like acts of self-harm. None of it feels like the national interest.”

This is a issue with had for years. The whole of transport policy built on the London experience of the chatter classes who are never far from a tube station. Utterly clueless of the reality outside of their own echo chamber. They have no idea the Northern line doesn't actually go to the North 🙄
Let's get rid of ALL government parking, including the House of Commons, expect for disabled people. Then we can start to believe they are really committed.

My partner struggles to walk 5 meters let alone 5 miles!. She has arthritis in both knees. She can barely walk to our wheelie bin and back.
I have to drive us to all the stores, like Morrisons and Tesco that are all miles away on the outskirts of town just to go food shopping.
As for work, I work 12 hour shifts. If you think I'm going to walk almost 5 miles to work, do a 12 hour shift, then walk 5 miles home again you got another think coming. Even doing it by car I only get about 4 hours between getting home at almost 6pm and having to go to bed at 10pm. In those 4 hours I have to get a bath/shower, eat a meal, and do any jobs around the house. I need to be in bed by 10pm because I have to be back up again at 3.30am the next morning to get ready for a 5.30am start at work.
These labour politicians are crazy. They have 0 understanding of how the world works outside of their little Westminster bubble.
So we all get healthy live an extra 10 years and then “ Your all living to long , we don’t have enough money to pay your pensions “

I cycle everywhere in summer but in winter it's too cold and dangerous in icy conditions.
Governments & and the politicians have been taking the piss for years.

Never happen. We all used to walk to town centres 30 or 40 years ago because housing estates were closer and accessible by foot. Now we have large housing estates being built further and further away, many don’t want to walk, shop and then have to carry it home. A lot is just a fundamental attitude that has changed over the decades. So many times I see people driving to places like a gym when they could walk and include that as part of the exercise regime. If you want to stop people driving about then perhaps create a transport system that is a true alternative, until we do then don’t expect anyone to give up their vehicles without a fight.
my local council spent £2M widening an existing footpath along a half mile stretch of dual carrieageway. . now they ripping it up to put entrance to a new housing estate on farm land 🤬

When everyone has been priced out of thier cars, & the roads are full of bicycles. The idiots in charge will be complaining ( there's too many bikes )

It works in the Netherlands, but the thing about the Netherlands is….. Everything is structured correctly, it works and for cyclists, it's FLAT ! You can't go a mile where I live without giant hills that no one other than the Tour-De-France Athletes could cycle up and they are all doped.

Being forced (by public infrastructure) to own and operate a car to meet basic needs (grocery, school etc) seems to be totally fine. How much are the average car costs per month in UK these days?
But god forbid they build something else than car roads and provide alternatives.
Look to the Netherlands, what they did and how they organize traffic. Also check how much money they are saving each year thanks to a healthier Population, less car accidents and deaths and less imports for cars, tires, Oil etc

A bike is not a practical vehicle considering the state of the roads and the weather in this country.

Nothing wrong with cycling or walking, but they have to be an individuals choice, not forced upon people, because it isn’t always practical.
Walking or cycling for 50% of journeys. Fine in Holland where it is flat.
Most of my pavements are overgrown pothole ridden & in area covered by hills!

If they waste our taxes on this, then they need a parallel Act of Parliament to makeit illegal for the Licra Louts to use the roads if there is a cycle path.
I stopped listening to all the Institutions in this Country.There all Ideological people on a personal crusade which I don't want any part of.
The arrogance will be their downfall. We are all going about our business just fine . Elderly, parents with kids, workmen with equipment, cold ice rain…I could go on..
I've had a car since 1982, however, for short distances of less than a mile, I do walk. And weather depending I do cycle more than drive if the distance is between a mile and several miles. The walking and cycling has actually kept me fit and healthy, plus my waistline has remained at 34" constantly. What I'm doing is the norm in most EU countries – people own a car and a bicycle, and I use either when the weather and mood permits. By the way, I'm from Stoke on Trent which has almost zero cycling infrastructure.
And how are you going to manage with all that shopping….

Wake up, this is why there's major road works going on all over. Especially manchester and surrounding areas. Full new road layouts ,bike lanes and walking paths too. Its coming in wether we like it or not. Reducing 2 lanes down to one for buses as well.
Next it will be , you can't visit family and friends cos u live out the 15 minute boundary.
It's becoming a literal open prison. And ths is going to be our daily exercise.
We can't fix the problems so you're going to have to walk, we're not but you are.
