@Bikerfrode – Frode Thomassen

In this 1-minute clip, I continue up the steep climb towards Tyven, one of Hammerfest’s most famous viewpoints. The film is taken from my longer Hammerfest ride, which you can find on my channel @bikerfrode, along with many other cycling films from both Norway and Sweden 🚴‍♂️🇳🇴🇸🇪

🌍 Hammerfest – an Arctic city with a long history
Hammerfest has around 11,000 inhabitants and was granted city status in 1789. The city has a dramatic history, especially during World War II when the entire city was burned down during the forced evacuation in 1944. After the war, Hammerfest was rebuilt and developed into a modern Arctic city with a strong local community.

In the middle of the city center is the Arctic Cultural Center (AKS) – the city’s cultural meeting place with cinema, concerts, theater and art. Hammerfest also has several schools, including Breilia School and Hammerfest High School.

⚙️ Business and working life
Today, Hammerfest is strongly influenced by energy and industry, especially the LNG production on Melkøya. Historically, fishing, trapping and shipping have been the most important industries, and much of the city’s identity is still linked to the sea and coastal culture.

🏔️ Tyven – height and significance
Tyven is a popular hiking destination and is located 418 meters above sea level. From the top, you usually have a fantastic view of Hammerfest, Sørøya, Melkøya and large parts of the coastline. On this day, the fog lies far down the mountain, which gives it a very special Arctic atmosphere.

🚴‍♂️ About the clip – heavy climb and dense fog
In this film, I work my way up one of the first really steep slopes towards Tyven. The speed is not high, but the training is all the better. The fog is thick, and it is a weather that demands respect.

I reflect on how important it is to be safe in the mountains:
If it hadn’t been a long way up here, I wouldn’t be on the mountain in this weather.
If you are surprised by thick fog without a map and compass, the safest thing to do is to stop and wait until the visibility improves. Fortunately, this trip follows a clear path all the way up.

This is Hammerfest at its most arctic: raw, demanding and beautiful at the same time.
