The geometry of old school bikes is so wack. Absolutely awful to learn on.
As for that specific bike – no idea, looks about 1994 entry level though.

What compelled you to buy him that piece of junk? Do you hate him? Is this a punishment? It’s not hard to find/ afford a proper BMX these days … did you even try? Are you unemployed?
The choices people make … lol

This bike is a great way to ensure he’s not going to want to get into actual riding. Awful to ride, awful to learn and an actual safety hazard.

No need to call this bike junk. If someone’s excited about it and BMX, let em be excites. To be the ones that are bashing for not having the latest and great top of the line stuff. Just encourage getting out and having fun!
There’s a chance, that could be a unique buke. Skate brands tried to venture into bmx here and there, and if this is an Independent Trucks bike. I tried to verify with no luck. But thats still a sweet bike! Teach him the ways about taking care of it and gazing fun with it! Forst, easiest thing to do, is tighten that chain up so it doesn’t slip. Good job!

Lower the stem, and replace the bars, and he’ll be good to go.

If I were you, for the sake of learning tricks I’d get him a much more up to date bike, probably used off of FB Marketplace, shoot for at least 175 to I’d say 300 tops, that range typically you could find a nice enough quality used complete or even used build, I’d say look for Sunday, WTP, Kink BMX, they usually put really good attention to detail and quality control with completes.
If it’s a used custom build make sure there’s a parts list so you could cross reference how good the parts are, their reputation, how well they hold up etc.
If there isn’t a parts list at least ask or maybe even get help ID’ing parts with photos.
As for the people talking shit about you getting that bike, screw em!
lemons to lemonade? You have a cruiser project now that both you and your kid could work on together.
Start with getting that thing cleaned up real well and get it a nice tune up
Grab some ODI Longneck Grips or some AME Tri Grips
An Odyssey 1999 Brake Kit with some DiaTech Brake Levers
Some classic style race seat or maybe even get an Odyssey Aitken Railed Seat
Throw on some Tan Wall Tioga Comp III tires
Replace the freewheel with an Odyssey 13 Tooth to modernize a little bit, and throw on a 39 tooth sprocket along with it.
Maybe even finish it off with some Sun Rhyno Lite Rims

That lay back seat post might be worth more than the bike if original. I dont think it would make him hate BMX, as others have stated. I burned through bikes like this in the 80s-90s til I eventually got a modern setup in ’02. Agree the bike isnt the safest for him as is. Someone upsized wit to fit a larger rider. Drop the quill stem or find a 1″ threadless fork near your headtube measurement, get rid of the longer handlebar setup, maybe a straight seatpost. Wouldn’t hurt to find a smaller crank if hes wanting to build speed in a bowl. Its fine for flatland but really looks like a dinner plate from here.

There’s nothing wrong with that bike. Independent wasn’t a big name in the bmx world in the 90’s like GT, Diamondback, ect, but it was there. I had a Hutch in the late 80’s till the mid 90’s and it was still one of the best bikes I’ve ever had. The junk bikes before my Hutch I learned how to take them apart, fix them, and put them back together which is exactly why I was even able to build my Hutch the way I wanted it. Just help him out with this bike when he needs you too and see where he goes with it. 😉👍
