I also switched to aluminum cages after snapping a bunch of plastic ones. I ride year round between 15F and 90F, I don’t think the plastic (in my price range) can hold up to the temp swings. And I’m not spending more than $15 on cages lol

Aluminum is fine and light and if you use the same sized bottle all the time it will work great probably. If you need to adjust the cage to fit different size bottles steel is the only way to go

After I had an aluminum cage break, I started using stainless steel King cages. Silca sells a similar metal cage

I abandoned aluminum cages altogether. In my experience they bend and change shape rather quickly. Never had this issue with plastic and carbon cages.

If you crash it they get snagged, they go out of shape and it’s hard to get back to a useable shape.
Of course carbon or plastic ones might break instead.

I never had a problem with aluminum cages, though I do prefer carbon fiber. But if you asked me why, I wouldn’t be able to give you a good answer. It’s all preference and those ones look great.

I wouldn’t have spent $50 on them. I bought some aluminum cages from Pro Bike Tool on Amazon eight years ago for $7.50 each, and they have had no issues. But they do look cool.

These look like Supacaz bottle cages. Enjoy their looks for a while and than look for others. They are terrible at keeping bottles, and that is what their primary task is.

Yeah they can be totally fine but these specific ones are super thin and flimsy. One of mine cracked after a month, company doesn’t stand behind their product. Ended up buying Ti ones off marketplace, way less floppy

The new flat style tends to snag and scrape my bottles… But so do the cheap plastic ones.
That said I have a collection of old school velocity anodized cages I run religiously. If you bend one out of shape it’s probably not going to go back perfectly to the old shape. If it’s cold and you really whack it, it can break. Most of the ones I use are slightly tweaked but still hold a bottle down the washboard so don’t fret too much.

I had this same one and the only thing I didn’t like was it made my bottles really marked up and dirty looking. Hard to get that off of my bottles so I switched. Mine were just raw aluminum colored no paint so idk if that will happen with yours too.

I have come to like plastic cages on modern frames that use rivnuts to secure the cages. I feel like side impacts flex the cage instead of ripping the threads out. No scientific data to back it up but I’m in flexy cage camp.

For those of you with 3D printers, there are many designs out there that work well and are plenty strong when printed in PETG or ABS/ASA.

I had an aluminum cage fail but it wasn’t due to the material, just bad design that didn’t hold bottles well. The first time it happened, I should have taken that as a serious warning and removed it; the second time it happened, it caused a wreck and I couldn’t ride my bike for three years.
I’m not opposed to aluminum but I use stainless steel mostly.

They hold bottles. Aluminum cages are like 3 dollars.

I think I have the same cages, Supacaz? They are nice, but they scratch up my metal water bottles and I always feel like I should put some duct tape on the inside of them to grab them better. Also, the cages will flex and bend, which is great for fitting a bottle in it but means it is possible for a bottle to fall out as well.
