Child fatally struck riding bicycle in New Bedford

A young boy riding his bicycle was struck and killed by a vehicle on Wednesday afternoon.

First responders rushed Cherokee Street at about 3:30 p.m. following emergency dispatches that indicated a 5-year-old child had been struck and was not breathing, with CPR in progress. Hours later, a landscaping truck was towed from the area.

New Bedford police said that the driver involved is cooperating with the investigation. Authorities have not yet released the name of the child or detailed the factors that led up to the crash.
