Saying goodbye to Portugal! On my final day cycling the stunning Algarve coast on the EuroVelo 1 bike tour, I leave behind my charming campsite and head east toward the Spanish border. Along the way, I take a detour to explore the beautiful, historic town of Tavira—visiting churches that used to be mosques, searching for ancient Phoenician walls, and enjoying one final, affordable Portuguese beach beer. With the wind finally shifting to the west, I hunt for a perfect wild camping spot to spend my absolute last night in Portugal before crossing over into Spain.

What an incredible way to finish up my time in Portugal! 🥹 I’m officially taking bets in the comments: what do you think I’ll hit first – 100,000 kilometers on the odometer or 10,000 subscribers here on the channel? Drop your guesses below, and a massive welcome to everyone who has newly subscribed! Next stop… Spain! 🇪🇸🚴♂️
Unfortunately, the bridge which would normally take you across the border into Spain over the Guadiana river is for cars only, unless you're willing to risk it. There's a ferry service out of Vila Real but you will have to pay extra for your bike. So pleased you have enjoyed your trek through Portugal. It's quite surprising that you haven't reached 10K subscribers yet, as your content is up there with the best.
I am so pleased you enjoyed your time in Portugal. I have lived in this wonderful country for 10 years: in the Algarve but up in the hills, not by the coast. I cycle regularly along the Eurovelo which can be quite beautiful. As a nation the Portuguese people are utterly delightful and very welcoming of foreigners. The pace of life is generally quite slow and, to be honest, it feels like an oasis of sanity in a world of madness. Do come back soon.
Well, Portugal was beautiful! Thanks for sharing your travels with us!
Very much enjoyed following your cycling adventure through the beautiful ,and seemingly amicable , Portugal. Also, good to see other touring passsing you they head northwards. How many days/weeks did it take and how many overall miles did you cover
