Ukrainian frontline units are increasingly using commercial satellite imagery to plan and adjust strikes against Russian targets, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal.

The publication recounts how one small unit of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, operating approximately 10 kilometers from the front line, spotted signs of enemy activity in a building hidden by dense vegetation. A reconnaissance drone couldn’t provide a complete picture due to the dense tree canopy, but Ukrainian troops gained access to detailed satellite data, which they received in near real time.

The article notes that satellite imagery allowed the identification of armored vehicles around the facility, likely linked to the Russian command. After several days of surveillance, the unit concluded that this was a coordination point for operations. Ukrainian forces subsequently struck the building and the vehicles using drones. According to The Wall Street Journal, over the past six months, the Ukrainian army has begun actively using satellite imagery from Colorado-based Vantor to improve the speed and accuracy of drone strikes. According to mission participants and experts, the time from reconnaissance to strike has been significantly reduced, sometimes by as much as 90%, as the military receives the information almost immediately after it is captured. This allows for significantly faster decision-making regarding targets that previously required lengthy analysis.

Vantor images are transmitted directly from satellite to a soldier’s tablet, phone, or laptop in just 15 minutes, bypassing the central intelligence headquarters in Kyiv, which typically slows the flow of intelligence to the front lines for hours or days.

According to one former Ukrainian soldier, in the past, satellite intelligence coming from Kyiv was sometimes so outdated that it was no longer useful on the front lines. However, a new approach effectively erases the time gap between receiving intelligence and using it. “The shortening of the sensor-to-shooter cycle is the defining trend of this war at the tactical level,” said Franz-Stefan Gady, a military analyst and founder of the consulting firm Gady Consulting.

At the same time, experts note that the main challenge remains dependence on weather conditions and the inability of satellites to continuously track moving targets.

Furthermore, removing staff analysts from the chain of command who processed satellite imagery increases the risk of misidentification of targets and mistaken attacks.

“There are processes that slow things down, but there are processes that are there for a reason,” said Nand Mulchandani, former chief technology officer of the Central Intelligence Agency and the U.S. Defense Department’s Artificial Intelligence Directorate. As reported, in May, Ukraine’s air defenses operated under record-breaking attack intensity , with the enemy employing over 8,000 air attack weapons. Despite this, interception effectiveness increased: the overall target destruction rate reached approximately 90.75%, with over 7,500 drones and missiles of various types shot down.
