Got attacked by a dog while commuting. Instinctively brought my foot close to my body, but somehow my foot clipped my front fender and the tire grabbed it, apparently that was enought to fully bend the fender indward and bring me to a complete stop.
But still, how does this even happen at all đ?
Was my first day on this bike aswell!

Exactly as you described it as happening. You kicked the fender. It ended up in the spokes.
At least it didnât give you a rapid stop flipping you over the handlebars.

The people who are against full fenders are gonna have a field day with this one đ personally I have none but would opt for just mudgaurds
Poorly designed fenders is how that happens. Most better fenders have weak link in the design to prevent that happening
I was riding messy trails after the 2024 hurricanes Helene and Milton and a large twig or maybe a small branch got caught in the front spokes, bent the wire fender support and similarly worked over the fender. I was counting my blessings the spokes weren’t damaged and the rim stayed true. Hope yours is the same.

Yup. The wheels are moving fast. They will GRAB anything that hits them.
I once had my foot slip off the pedal b/c gears were out of whack and things jumped, and … I hadn’t put the heels on for the shoes (they’re “amphibious” and designed to have heel fold down under)…
The wwheel grabbed my shoe, and then the fender, and dumped me over the handlebars. I’m standing there looking at my sock, the shoe in the wheel… tried to extract it… called work to say I’d be late (happily it was March so I was wearing enough layers not to be hurt)…
…. and asked what MacGyver or my father would say. “How it went in is how to get it out, just wheel it backwards!”
dropped it by the bike shop so they could bend things back in shape and have another “torture tester” story to tell…
Yo! I did the exact same thing yesterday, first time it ever happened to me . My foot was just a little too forward and pushed the mud guard into the tyre and up it went.
Yeah, you’re going to need a new fender, that is tough luck. Good thing you didn’t fall.
huge tip if you see dog following you just get off the bike. i always start to chase them and bark :)))
Be sure to check your rear wheel for loose spokes and or broken nipples. Youâll probably see a little wobble when your wheel is spinning too.
it may be a very light thin metal guard. once the tire bit into it, it was all over.
Consumer bike parts are built like school buses.
Functional, cheap, no regard for durability or longevity.
