Hello friends,
This week’s adventure takes me from the stunning Adriatic coastline of Croatia deep into the mountains of Montenegro before crossing into Bosnia and eventually looping all the way back to the Croatian coast.
What started as a simple bikepacking route quickly turned into one of the most memorable cycling adventures I’ve had. From battling brutal coastal winds and torrential rain to climbing the legendary Kotor Serpentine Road, exploring Lovćen National Park, and discovering hidden corners of Montenegro far beyond the cruise ship crowds, this trip reminded me exactly why I love travelling by bike.
Along the way I met fellow cyclists, explored medieval towns, crossed multiple borders, rode through some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in the Balkans, and learned a lot about a fascinating part of Europe that many people never see beyond the tourist hotspots.
If you’re interested in bikepacking, cycle touring, ultra cycling, adventure travel, or you’re planning your own cycling trip through Montenegro, Croatia, or the Balkans, I think you’ll enjoy this one.
Over the last few months I’ve found myself overthinking things far more than usual. Before this journey I almost talked myself out of coming altogether. But once I got moving, met people, and immersed myself in the experience, I was reminded that most of the fears we build up beforehand rarely match reality.
Sometimes the best thing you can do is take the first step and trust that the rest will work itself out.
The Balkans remain one of the most rewarding places I’ve ever ridden a bike. Within a few days you can cross multiple countries, experience different cultures, climb huge mountains, ride along beautiful coastlines, and discover places that still feel genuinely adventurous.
Montenegro in particular surprised me. Most visitors see Kotor and the coast, but the mountains, national parks, small towns, and people I met along the way were every bit as memorable as the famous viewpoints.
If you’re looking for a bikepacking destination in Europe that still feels wild, authentic, and relatively undiscovered, this region deserves a place on your list.
This journey is only part of a much bigger Balkan adventure.
There are still more mountains to explore, more borders to cross, and hopefully a return trip to northern Montenegro and Durmitor National Park in the future.

Another stunningly beautiful video Andy, congratulations.
Great vid, bet you can’t wait to get back to the Gosport bus lane 😂
I consider myself a pretty well-educated guy, but i've been realizing more and more how little i actually know about most of the balkan countries, aswell as simply not knowing how stunning most (if not all) of them really are. Thanks for showing me/us, Andy!
