Two days ago I was taking off from a stop pretty aggressively (standing) and this broke. I fell hard with some road rash and a bruised tail bone.

I bought this bike used from an LBS 7 years ago and commute with it. It's not a fancy bike by any means but I love it and would like to keep it going. I'm a DIY guy so I'd like to know what to look for when shopping for a used crank.

In a related note, I've felt slight bearing play in the crank for years now. I tried to get the plastic retainer not off before but started chewing it up so I stopped. Where can I get a 6-pointed tool for it?

Your crank may be completely fine but your BB spindle has failed.

Looks like a very cheap BB as this is typically not a fairly seen with square taper BBs.

Take it to a shop for a replacement bottom bracket… I’m all for learning to work on stuff yourself, but the broken bb is a janky model and if you replace it with a better one like a Shimano you would need one tool to take the old one out and a different tool to install the new one. Furthermore the axle length is non-standard, so you need the crank arms separated from the axle (and broken part) to measure before you order. It’s a simple job for a shop
