Rode 50 miles this morning, rolled into my driveway, got off the bike, opened the garage, and when I lifted my bike to put it on the stand, the sidewall of my Michelin Pro 5 TLR randomly blew out. Not while I was on it, but while I was holding it in my hands placing it on the stand. FWIW these are 700×40.
I didn't hit anything, there's no damage to the rim. Just looks like it frayed out between the bead and the sidewall. Was running at probably 35 PSI. Unfortunately too, because I really liked these tires. Only had maybe 250 miles on them. This a defect, or does something cause this kind of failure?

Tire lever abuse during install.
Sounds more like a defect than not to me, but really no way of knowing if you sliced it slightly on your ride and it finally gave out in your garage.
I would definitely contact the manufacturer or store you bought it from and ask for warranty claim based on your description above. Be kind and mention you loved the tire until this blowout. If they say no then you have your answer and start shopping for a different tire.
Does that look like sidewall damage near to the tread right at the blowout? I’m looking on my phone and can’t zoom too much.
If not, I’d say to go back to the shop you got them from too, have them submit a claim.
It almost looks like it was never beaded correctly to begin with which caused stress on the sidewall above the bead. Just taking this image at face value
It looks like something that should’ve happened with a tire inflated far too much. Did you over inflate them when you installed them?
My tea worry would be with the rim. Check it or get it checked. A wheel is far more expensive than a tire…
