8,000 calories. One Giro d’Italia stage.
Ever wondered how much food a professional cyclist needs during a Grand Tour? In this video, Gijs Leemreize takes you through a full day of eating at the Giro d’Italia, discussing everything from breakfast and race nutrition to recovery meals after the stage. Alongside Gijs, our team chef explains how we decide what riders eat, how nutrition changes depending on the stage profile, and why fueling is one of the biggest performance factors in modern cycling. Because in cycling, eating enough is part of the job.

Sugary Fruit juices and ketchup zero? this does not make any sense guys.
🤤 But do you ever get tired of eating, eating and more eating? Can it get to be a chore during a 3 week race?
It looks super delicious and what a professional chef. Impressive how well organized it all is.
Imagine doing the hardest sport in the world on a toxic slave diet. Sugar, cake, bread, useless veg, coke, scant animal protein, no red meat, scant fat, lab-made gels/powders. Unreal. Plus they're all sugar and caffeine addicts.
good eatin is half winning. Did you win too…
Damn, man! The average person would weigh over 350 lbs if they ate that much food!
Shame it wasn,t in english. Juhaptergee
Why there are not black 🖤 riders? RACISTS!
No sabía que picnic post estaban en el Giro 😮… andan desaparecidos
The average person does weigh 350, yet never eats even one meal that healthy
If i had meals like this id do easy any tour 😂😂😂
I can eat easily 8.000 calories a day even without cycling.
Eu nu cred că ăștia manca orez, 2 Feli de pâine un ou și niste frunze și participa apoi în turul Italiei 😂.
What a shame… All that effort for literally less than 100 UCI points. We expect more as fans. It was really hard to watch this giro.
It looks tasteless 😅
Do they check their blood sugar levels? Will there be adverse effects of it in future?
That was 8,000 calories? It looked more like 3000 unless we are counting the gels?
I would probably be diabetic or on the verge of being diabetic if I ate like this .
An Italian rider would die after 2 days of eating that stuff.
Focaccia pesto – shaked cherry-apple juice. Sic!
Supplements?
Nice info thank you
Rice pudding for Breakfast? An omelette (looking dry as a nun's Gin and Tonic )with jam on the side? Maybe in Belgium mate.
I thought they eat at the hotel buffet😁😁
5:05 Matcha cake is also a Sprinters Cake, isn't it?
Very interesting.
why not put directly robots on the bikes
me thinking i can make it with a banana and bread in the morning xD
My guy sounds so sleepy at breakfast lmao
Really interesting clip. Those weren't 8000 calories on the plates, but the gels are probably very intense. I watched the Giro 2026 and I take my hat off to every rider who put themselves through that.
Giro italia????? 2026????
So you are saying if i want to eat a lot of food i should become a rider?
Not the healthiest diet though. I'm asking myself if they ever try some other diets? Did they ever try a ketogenic diet for professional cycling?
What about the gut health? Do they keep an eye on that too?
I was more concerned about the language, wtf are they speaking?
I'd be so worried about diabetes tbh
