The Trans Dinarica is finally here! This video covers the ride to the start of the route in Slovenia.

I’m joined for this one by my friend Bill, who I met riding the GDMBR a couple of years back. It’s great to be back on the road together. We kick things off in Munich, where a subscriber to the channel very kindly offers to show us around, which was a brilliant way to start the trip.

From Munich we ride east, passing through Salzburg in Austria before a brief stretch through northern Italy, and then finally into Slovenia. Seven days of riding to reach Trtnik, a small village just a short distance from the official start of the Trans Dinarica in Tolmin. Honestly, this first week set the tone perfectly, no rush, no pressure, just great riding through beautiful countryside.

The Trans Dinarica is a 5,500km bikepacking route crossing eight countries through the Balkans (Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Albania). The next video will mark the official start of the route itself, so please consider subscribing if you would like to follow along. Videos will be going up regularly throughout the trip.

Thank you for watching.

  1. Excellent video!
    Great to see Bill again.
Tour around Munich by Dominic was very interesting.
    People in Slovenia were great!
By the way, the first tap you used in Austria to fill your bottles said "Kein Trinkwasser" which means "Not Drinking water"

  2. Great start of the trip and this new series. And yes Mat, I think we all do want to see you wipe that grease of your seatpost 😉

  3. Shout out to your Munich tour guide riding a Jones SWB. Small brand out of the US and the bike I may take to ride the GDMBR when I finally do it. Looking forward to the rest of the adventure!

  4. There's a reason why Bavaria is considered to be one of the best regions in the world for bike touring. The cycling infrastructure, climate, beer, food, camping or bnbs, and the hospitality, just incredible

  5. Why wild camp to save 10 eur? 2 showers in a camp ground can save a lot of "collateral damage" to your cycling shorts, plus an evening shower makes for a better night's sleep

  6. So it begins! May the winds be gentle and the beer cold! Have a great ride, its so nice to see new adventures again. Thank you Mat and Bill. Two legends.

  7. Love it Mat!! Can't wait to follow this. Congrats both.
What tent has Bill got? Bit of a kit segment would be great for us fellow geeks 😂.
    All the best. 👍🏻
