Day 46. 79km (85733kms 8yrs)
I’d chosen well; my campsite was utterly quiet save for the sound of the waves. Come morning I could hear small groups of walkers on the trails, but I remained hidden from them. With no Warm Showers host tonight either I had no specific distance objective for the day, except that I had a couple of stretches of beachside forest in mind for camping.
Back on Eurovelo 1 I mostly followed the Atlantic route to Pornic cutting a bit of the corner as the weather was grey and damp, views minimal. The huge fishing nets attached to little wooden sheds on stilts looked particularly lovely against the mist. In Pornic I scored a baguette directly out of the bakery’s oven, and combined with the can of local pâté given to me by Genevieve it made a very good lunch.
Aware that the tidal road to Île de Noirmoutier was the ‘longest submersible road in the world’ I decided to take the unique trip out to the island. The tide was low when I arrived so I didn’t pay huge attention to the blinking warning signs. I sat down in some shelter to write my blog and have a snack, but by the time I emerged I couldn’t believe my eyes; the road was already under water! At first I was annoyed at myself for missing the opportunity, but that was quickly replaced by relief that I hadn’t been caught out in the rising tide in the middle of this 4km road!
Instead I turned back around heading now for my desired camp. The land is still largely flat here; each minor road lined by a channels where large brown rodents jumped out of sight into the water faster than I could get a camera on them. At fôret domaniale des pays de Monts I cycled over pine needles and pushed through deeper sand until I reached the edge of the forest and the view out to sea. This time I pitched the tent backed up against the trees in view of the sunset; golf course to the east, dunes to the west. It was a glorious view, and though the tent was exposed nobody was about. I enjoyed my dinner and ‘Bordeaux supérieur’ as the sun set 🌅

If I have a pork pie or a tin of Pek chopped pork and I have no way of heating it up then I discard the jelly as I find it spoils the taste.
I'm glad that you made it across the causeway, a lot of people don't realise just how fast the roads get covered by the incoming tide.
I've seen many people need rescuing from their floating vehicles when crossing the causeway to and from Holy Island just north of where I live.
Lucky escape but silver or golden lining with that camping location and sunset 🎉
Least you didn't need scuba diving equipment. 😂 lovely camping site .
