On 29 January 2022, the Highway Code changes to make our roads safer for everyone.
In this short video Cycling UK explains four of these key changes, but for more information and to find out how these changes came about visit:

The roads will never be safe until there is automobiles. Why not do an expetiment were there are no cars on the road for a week within a community or town, only bikes.
Nice calm video up to 2:08
For the dooring example I was 100% expecting just a swerve. Not a full-on dramatic action stunt sequence.
Im from NL. Are all these rules new?????
Motorists are responsible for the vast majority of: Crashes, roadway deaths, pollution (apart from EVs), property damage, speeding and damage to roadways.
Inconvenient facts they don't like to mention. So compelling them to drive safer shouldn't be too much to ask.
Excellent news! 🙂
All very good but it will be a brave cyclist who crosses a junction while using a footpath based cycle track , trusting any car behind will stop , as dar as I could see in the example the cyclist didn't even look behind before crossing.
Also it won't be safer in this country till we get 'j' walking laws , ar present pedestrians are king and hold least responsibility so why bother with a white line segregating pedestrians and cyclists when they have the right to walk anywhere!
Hopefully this will improve safety slightly – I find eye contact and driver/cyclist/pedestrian analysis a very important skill, when out on the roads – If you've not made eye contact, proceed with caution:
Also, as a CTC member who has cycled 10's of thousands of miles all over GB, I think cyclists also have a responsibility not to cycle around in dark or black clothing – As portrait in this Cycling UK video..? As a driver also, I think the SKY cycling team have a lot to answer for, when they brought in their all black team colours?
Funny how you've not just missed out the biggest change for cyclists, you've actually filmed 5 cyclists ignoring the new rule! Rule 66 now says "Be aware of drivers behind you and allow them to overtake (for example, by moving into single file or stopping)". The cyclist at 1:23 isn't doing this, and neither is the one at 1:33 the one at 1:47, or the angry one at 2:01, or the one at 2:35.
Stupid rules for stupid people , if you need to be told to check behend before you open your door then you should not be driving. As for the other things, common sense is all that is needed and as there is a lack of it in drivers cyclist and walkers these these new rules will only make things worse .
Nice one UK!
Dutch reach left hand on the handle not the door latch that should have been her right hand ?
I walk, cycle, ride a motorcycle, drive a car and drive a van (not all at the same time of course) and having also been knocked off the pedal cycle from behind by a car doing well over the speed limit, I think it’s great to introduce the hierarchy of road users. Not sure about the “let pedestrians go across the road if at a junction waiting to cross” being particularly safe for the cyclist waiting to turn – feels like a recipe for a rear end shunt. I’m all for pedestrians having right of way if they’re already crossing though.
I read through the new rules myself and I noticed you didn't mention about the part of cyclists to show due consideration towards other road users and not be road hogs but allow traffic to pass, also riding two abreast is now only permitted if you are supporting a young rider or inexperience rider can you give explanation why you have missed these parts from your video
Also the rules on giving way at junctions is worded you should and not you must this means it's not mandatory this video is very misleading and skips lots of points what don't favour the group it supports, the new rules should be described in a more acurate fashion if safety is what's in mind
With all these changes I will be getting cameras on my bike for evidence I nearly got taken out by a range rover 3 days ago , I was on the road as no cycle lane provision he over took me closely then immediately tried to turn left into his drive I was only saved because he did check his nearside mirror but only just as his front wheels were turned to make the move, I was doing 15 mph at the time so to overtake me and then brake and turn what was he doing! If he'd waited behind me he wouldn't have been held up( I say he but it could have been a she I couldn't see though the tinted windows)
Oh man, do I feel sorry for those cocky cyclists and pedestrians when their paralysed or their families when they're dead….
What genius thought that throwing people across the road whilst there is traffic is going to save lives?
You're basically telling people to risk their lives instead of crossing when it is safe…. EVERY DEATH IS ON YOUR HANDS.
Who is adjusting these comments… I'm sorry but no one thinks this is a good idea or will save lives…
Very useful information. Thank you for your time in compiling and providing it.
An innovative measure on vehicles, particularly LGVs & HGVs, is the mirror camera which replace the reflective glass mirrors, including the blind spots mirrors. The public is yet to be made fully aware that new lorries may carry this technology which may vastly reduce the benefits of eye contact.
At junctions please position yourself in a manner that YOU have eye contact with and can acknowledge the drivers of larger vehicles.
Thank you.

Just put cyclists at more risk with their crazy junction rules, as a cyclist I’m sticking to my own rules.
Nearing a junction must take primary position and behave like a car driver would, nearing a junction must not undertake or overtake while going straight as this would be braking the first rule when approaching a junction one must be in the centre of the lane
These rules are great us I have already flattened two cyclists coming up my inside who thought they be safe under new law, fools 🤣
Not "the highway code is changing", there are two highway codes in the UK with the Northern Ireland HC remaining unchanged.
My personal view is : It should be no longer be called / named, Highway code ( sounds weak) but should be named : HIGHWAY LAW!! ( just saying )
Peace to all!!
You people are selfish beyond belief. Your taking up road space from people who need to take the bus, what about disabled people? How are they meant to go to place to place when the whole road is blocked up with cycle lanes. You people are disgustingly selfish, discriminating against the vulnerable and disabled
So does that mean Green Man crossings at junctions are now redundant as pedestrians can always walk across? The cyclist in the incident at 2.00 didn't bother looking behind when he rejoined the road.
Don't think 9 out of 10 drivers know about the rule change.
Do you help with getting cameras?
I think that who comes off worse in a collision between a pedestrian and a cyclist could be debated. Have they done any tests to figure out the order of responsibility?
Unfortunately new rules written by fools who will hopefully correct their guidance before causing multiple more injuries and deaths. As much as a vehicle can do to keep safe there are always blind spots and braking takes longer than stopping walking please go back to school study physics or take up a different job maybe take up the unused cycle lanes that go unused view 1min into the video 😅 fyi I enjoy cycling but don't belive racing on a busy traffic road is right the same as people don't race cars on busy roads
I cycle drive a car and walk, one thing about giving way to pedestrians I think may be a problem is this. I'm in a car about to exit off a very busy roundabout, there are pedestrians crossing my exit road very close to the actual roundabout. If I stop to give way I will still be on the roundabout. In that situation, I will either block up the roundabout or even worse other vehicles on the roundabout may run into me, or each other.
Very welcome and enlightened improvements. British drivers are so arrogant the way they use the roads as if they owned them. Those days are now over, fortunately.
