I’m still new to this, but it seems like the majority of helmets I see on people in this community. Don’t have that front plastic guard. Is there a functional reason for this? I always thought it was there for aerodynamics and to help keep the sun out of your eyes.

Keep it
Its just the difference in style between road, mountain and commuter style helmets. If you think its cool, dont worry about it.
This is what many would consider a mountain bike helmet. More coverage and a peak. It suits a more upright riding position. What you’re seeing is a road bike helmet better suited to a more head down position where the visor would get in the way. Since they usually go faster, aerodynamics play a bigger part in those helmet designs.
You do you, but it is designed for the visor to be there.
They’re there to stop branches, and other trail debris and sometimes they even keep sun out of your eyes.
It’s just a sun shade. Nothing about this helmet was particularly designed with aerodynamics in mind.
But yeah, don’t remove it — it’s how that helmet was designed.
You can buy a helmet without one next time if you don’t like it, but it’s not advisable to modify brand new safety equipment 🤙

keep it.
It’s a MTB helmet. I ride with one for the additional coverage and brim for keeping things out of my face a bit, including the sun. There’s no reason to take it off unless it bothers you.
I keep mine. I can dip my head a bit to avoid bugs to the face, the sun or the rain (whilst still being able to see the road).
