Hi!

So I decided to give this clip pedaling thing a go and got myself some SPD pedals (PD-ME700) along with some thermo shoes (Vaude Mink III STX). I think I got the cleats installed correctly but I did want to try the mechanism before installing the pedals on the bike and, well..

What you're looking at is the right-sided shoe on the right-sided pedal – but flipped to the other side, so I have the pointy end of the cleat stuck in the spring-loaded part of the pedal. It didn't even occur to me that I could get cleats in this way but I'm not quite sure how to get them unstuck now, release by turning the heel either way does not seem to do the trick anymore. I looked at several videos to release the spring on Shimano pedals via a screwdriver but couldn't find one for my model and those other models seem a little more reduced and easier to access. So, basically I'm stuck, any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Picture #1: the whole mess

Picture #2: closeup with the cleat position (somewhat) visible

Picture #3: other shoe for comparison's sake.

P.S. I also think the cleat on the boot might be a little loose, which obviously doesn't help.

  1. Twist it out. Push the heel away from the axle. If you can’t get enough purchase on it install the pedal on the bike and then twist the heel away to pop it out.

My first ride with SPDs I locked in one foot and didn’t know how to unclip. Rode 5km to the group ride meetup before antihero cyclist explained it to me.

Install the pedal on a crank. There’s usually an Allen head that you can access if the bolt for the pedal spanner is a struggle.

Then jump on the bike and fit the shoe and release.

  3. You can also loosen the tension bolt at the back of the pedal. That should make it easier to get it out. Definitely, screw the pedal into the crank arm so you have some leverage.

So, there is a non-zero chance you’ve ruined the pedal, or will ruin it trying to get it out. The first thing I would try is to take the Allen key you’d use to install the pedal, put it into the spindle as if you were going to install it, and use it as extra leverage while trying to do the normal twist removal. If that fails, you may have to disassemble the pedal using the 3 Phillips screws visible on the face. This is a truly novel problem, so I can’t promise results.

Install the pedals and that should give more purchase to yank the shoe off.

Put your pedals on, sit on your seat backwards, put foot in shoe, twist heel to unclip

I thought this was a picture of Slave-1 with the engines off for a minute
