Today was my N'th trip to Brompton Junction for warranty service on my 10-month-old C-Line Electric. After hearing them say, "we think your headset is fine" one too many times, I finally decided to pull the trigger and ask for a refund.
When I got home, I decided to map out every single thing that has broken on an image of the bike and sharing here, as it looks pretty impressive. As you can see:
- Sporadic, loud clicks started coming from the rear. They replaced the entire rear wheel, which fixed it.
- The handlebar grips peeled off. They refused to cover it under warranty, so I had to buy new ones.
- The leather on the saddle cracked, I didn't even mention it to Brompton being overwhelmed by the rest.
- The battery recently started glitching. Just today, it took me about 5 minutes to get it to start my ride.
- The Headset: This has been a constant pain. It clicks and wobbles. I’ve taken it to Brompton Junction a few times to be tightened, and I even bought two wrenches to tighten it myself. The fix only ever lasts a day or two. Today they said "we don't see any problem here" even though it sounds like a broken Lime Bike while riding.
- Rear Light:Â Died completely (though this was fixed under warranty).
- Pedals:Â I bought G-Line pedals, but after 9 months, the bearings seem to have died. The left one has started making noise.
- Wiring: The insulation on the electrical cable has cracked which sounds pretty dangerous, and today they claimed they fix it with tape 🤯
- Not pictured, but there's also something off with the seatpost. Sometimes it gets stuck, and I can't push it down to fold the bike. Even though I've never experienced this on other Bromptons I've ridden, the mechanic said "that's ok".
This bike strictly stored indoors and only used for normal commuting in London. No crazy riding at all.
For now, my plan is to try to get a refund from Brompton and upgrade to a G-Line, as it seems to be more bulletproof. I have no idea if it will work since I didn't keep a strict paper trail (especially for the headset fixes)—I honestly never planned on returning it. But once I realised my only other option is to spend £100-£300 a month on servicing going forward after warranty expires, returning it feels like my only choice.

Highlighted the folding mechanism on the image by mistake, no issues with this one
Ah, I forgot to mention: the small plastic piece that keeps the chain on the chainring fell off during the very first week. As far as I know, this is a pretty common problem.
I had 4 Bromptons. My first one was 12 years ago. I now have a C-line and a T-line. Never had an issue. But tbh I’m not the kind of person that gets annoyed by a small clicking sound or whatever. It sounds like you are frustrated with it. Maybe better to cut your losses and move on.
