The Gorges de la Bourne is a spectacular canyon located in the Vercors Massif within the Isère department of southeastern France. Carved by the Bourne River, the gorge is renowned for its dramatic limestone cliffs and a highly engineered balcony road that connects the towns of Pont-en-Royans and Villard-de-Lans. This route, classified as the RD 531, was primarily constructed in the late 19th century to open up the isolated mountain plateau to commerce and tourism. The road is characterized by sections carved directly into the rock face, narrow tunnels, and overhangs that offer vertical views of the riverbed below. As a site of significant geological and ecological interest, the area is protected as part of the Parc Naturel Régional du Vercors. It remains one of the most iconic “cor niche” roads in the French Alps, attracting cyclists, motorcyclists, and sightseers despite its challenging driving conditions and seasonal closures for maintenance.
