I'm trying to decide whether to fix up my old 2018 Trek FX 2 or buy a new Trek FX 2. I took it into my local bike shop and they said it would cost approximately $400 to fix up–it needed a new seat, new brakes, new cassette, new chain, new handlebars, and probably some other stuff.

I bike to work pretty much every day, rain or shine, and I have to leave it outside, so it sees a lot of wear and tear. On the one hand, I would like to keep my old bike if it's reasonable to fix it up and keep it running for a few more years–I always like looking at old bikes and having one that's not a target for bike thieves is attractive. On the other hand, if I can get a better, newer bike for close to the same price, I think I'd prefer that. Any advice on how to think through the problem would be appreciated!

Wait you use that daily and it looks like that?
Maybe check a bike non profit around your area. Some sell you parts for cheap and they help you fix them up. If that was my bike I could prob fix it right up for 50$ here in my hometown.

  2. $400 for all that is pretty good, actually. And $400 after eight years of wear and tear is also pretty good.

A new FX 2 will cost you a bit more than that. If you go that route, you’ll also be getting new things that haven’t failed yet. I think the pros and cons are basically going to be that versus the sentimental value of your current bike.

If i’d DIY it it would cost me less than 100$ i think.

You can buy take off seats for cheap.

Handle bars wont need replacing, maybe the grips do? But thats also fairly cheap parts and easy to DIY.

New brakes? What needs done? Just pads? Or cables? Or whats wrong? Brake pads are cheap and somewhat easy to DIY.

Drive train parts are a bit more expensive and harder to DIY. Especially the casette.
