Had a free Sunday and decided to try some stuff! Was looking at different builds for the Allied Echo and noticed Allied has been specing the ZIPP XPLR wheels with 38mm Vittoria Corsa pros. Figured I’d give it a shot (don’t tell ZIPP)! Also noticed they were coming with the 46 tooth chainring so I threw that on as well.
For context, I am a 1 bike kind of guy and I enjoy trying to make it work for both road and gravel. I would not use this set up on gravel (I have some 2.25 dubnitals for that)
Tires: they blew up to about 41mm on Zipp wheels that have a 32mm internal width. Tires are super supple and feel great. They have a seamless transition from tire to rim so gotta be somewhat aero! The handling is interesting, a bit twitchy up front due to the bike not being made for tires this small but overall did not slow me down. I would not feel as comfortable leaning the bike over as far as I would on a pure road bike due to the cotton side walls of the tires and the fear of riding on the side wall of the tires. BB is low, I have 165mm cranks on my size 58 and the wolf tooth del pedals so not concerned with pedal strikes but wanted to mention for anyone interested in trying these tires.
Chainring: not much to mention here. I ride at a cadence and speed on flatter terrain that allows me to ride in a part of the cassette with smaller jumps than with my 40 tooth chainring. So it feels great at about 22-26 mph. Don’t think I could use this chainring climbing up stuff around Denver (deer creek canyon, lookout, etc) but will have to give it a shot before making a conclusion on that.
Overall has been a fun experience!
