I went to Walmart and asked if they have any milk crates and then I zip tied it onto my cheap rack lol. Spending anywhere from $50-200 on these bike panniers seems like a good investment and I think they would offer many advantages, but for people like me who needs to carry my lunchbox, laptop backpack, water bottle, and bike lock, this works perfectly.

I love a big open basket / box / crate on a bike that one can just chuck things into (gently, I suppose, with the laptop)

A great solution – you just might consider a bungee net over the top to secure the cargo.
