Hi everyone,
I'm a college student and I've been needing a better way to get places around a large, relatively-ish bike friendly city (in Texas). Some info about me: 6'0" (182 cm), 260 lbs (117 kg) — I'm looking at non-ebikes for more exercise as well.
I'm looking for a super budget-friendly ($300-400 max) entry level commuter bike. This is pretty important to me as my city also has pretty high bike theft rates, so although I will be investing in a U-lock and a chain, I don't want to be crying too much if it gets stolen. Also I am not handy at all, but I am very willing to learn. I am mainly looking for reliability and comfort.
Some of the bikes I've been looking at are (in order of the photos):
- Ozark Trail G1 Explorer (New) from Walmart. ($250-290)
- Leaning towards this because it's so cheap and maybe I can upgrade it over time
- Also won't have to worry about needing to find a way to pick it up
- Probably go for a flat handle?
- Janis Citizen 2 21" – $325 listed on FB Marketplace
- Looks like pretty good condition?
- Large Frame Linus Commuter Bike – Roadster Sport 3i – $500 listed on FB Marketplace
- A bit over-budget but includes saddlebag, lock, and added front rack
- Says brakes were recently calibrated and is ready to ride
- Huffy Highland 21 Speed – $50 listed on FB Marketplace
- Very cheap, should I just go for this?
I am a bit hesitant to go for the more expensive FB marketplace options since I don't really know what to look for in a bike and prob won't know if something I see is bad. Also will be my first time buying off of marketplace.
Any advice would be super appreciated! Again, I am totally new to this so any info would be amazing! Thank you!

One needs to have some knowledge and experience to assess a used bike, so if you don’t have that, better to get new.
The OT also has a geometry more suited to comfort, speed, and versatility as far as terrain. It gets only positive reviews, including quality. You can also make sure it’s the right size for you.
The Linus is OK, has good fenders, racks, and panniers, which cost money to add, and are pretty necessary for commuting, but you pay a bit extra there just for style above functionality for a Linus. But it also looks like a decent option, if it fits you.
The other two bikes are a bit revolting to be honest, spurn them 🙂
