"1927" Oil on Canvas, 60" x 40" completed in February 2026 by me. This is based on one of my favorite photographs of the tour taken 99 years ago. This was one of the first tours where teams were allowed. There were no support vehicles, everyone was their own mechanic and support. The road conditions were terrible, the bikes heavy, and the attrition rate was high. Everyone carried spare tubes, tires, tools, and cigarettes.
For me, this scene feels like 85 miles into what was supposed to be a "casual 50" when someone said "Hey I know a shortcut!" and now you somehow have another two hours of riding ahead of you. I love this moment so much.
I made my best guess with jersey colors. This is painting number 5 in a series of 50 paintings I'm working on this in 2026 celebrating the golden age of cycling.
Hope you enjoy it! I absolutely loved painting this history.
