I just mounted a Blackburn Outpost Cargo Cage with an MSR fuel bottle and it honestly feels way too bulky for what I need.
I only carry the fuel bottle in that spot, no drybag or heavy load. The setup looks overbuilt and a bit clunky on the bike.
Are there any cleaner / simpler alternatives that still hold a MSR bottle securely?
Ideally something lighter or more minimal.
What are you using for fuel bottles on bikepacking setups?

Nice, I though that was a fire extinguisher for a second.
King cage titanium manything cage (the one with the triple pack mounts) and a pair of voile straps attached to the cage with 1” rubber o-rings. The MSR fuel bottle is pretty narrow and so it makes most cargo cages feel pretty wide. I mount this in the same spot you’ve got yours and the manything cage is narrow enough that when I don’t have anything mounted to it I don’t even notice it.
Lezyne power cage.
I mostly use an isobutane stove and carry the smallest size canister for short trips and the medium sized one for longer trips. I usually carry the canister in my frame bag and on my Salsa anything cage where you have your fuel bottle I typically carry my “dirty” water that I collect along the way before filtering it into my drinking bottle. I think your cage/bottle setup looks fine and seems very functional, just be sure to give the lid area a good wipe fore opening it because it will be filthy and you don’t want to introduce dirt into your fuel.
Is the diameter equal or less than a nalgene? Highly recommend the Arundel Looney Bin. Max size is a nalgene which i use regularly in the bottom slot there. I also did a coleman propane tank for a tour
Lezyne Power cage is what you want. Super cheap, super secure. I run one on my downtube for exactly this purpose.

I keep it in one of the bags. Used to, anyways. Frankly I’ve not used the
fuel bottle after on my first trip with a stove I discovered I
could purchase small gas cartridges everywhere. 😉
I’ve used a few different cages in that spot and twice, I snapped the bottom of the cage off hitting a rock or a tree stump. It’s not an ideal storage area, unless you are riding mostly flat terrain.
I used pipe clamps to mount bottle cages to my seat stays and I like that a lot better. I’m on a Surly so it’s plenty robust enough, and a large frame so they don’t hit my legs.
Ive found multible types for these BowTies and else KingCage maybe?

Actually I use 3 on my rig with military canteens. Very secure. 2 on the trailer one on the Blackburn outpost rear rack. Mounts are strong zero bounce movements. I’ve been a Blackburn lover for decades

How do you prevent it from rattling?
If you use that cage do yourself a huge favor and replace those straps with Voile straps. Pro tip: Voile sells straps on eBay at a good discount.
the Blackburn looks to me an overkill
for that business I prefer a Zefal adventure cage that’s sturdy enough, lighter and much cheaper
These might fit nice. We ordered them to carry dry bags on our forks but they were way too small for that.

Second for King Cage anything Ti. I use an alcohol stove, so fuel bottle is a smart water bottle of everclear.
A Widefoot cage might work?
i thought that was a gasoline tank for those msr burners
I ise these, and they’re light minimal and secure

I store a 2l insulated water bottle on the downtube. (happens to be in a outpost cargo cage)
And i got 2 of them on the fork for clothes and other bits & bobs
