I was doing a group ride yesterday, and after making a turn and starting to pedal back up to speed, my Di2 derailleur seemingly snapped in two and then went for a spin with the chain and wedged into the chain stay. The rear wheel came to a complete stop, and I slid to a "controlled" stop. Both chain stays AND both seat stays cracked….which is stunning to see. The entire rear section of the frame cracked between those 4 points.

Shimano already said it is not their problem because it is 4 years old and the warranty was for 3 years. My bike insurance does not cover it unless I crashed. And I am waiting on Canyon to see what, if anything, they can do.

The bike is 4 years old. Original components. No crashes ever. I have never even forgotten to unclip and fallen over. I am at a loss as to how a derailleur can snap like this.

  1. Sorry for your loss!

Can you take a close-up photograph of the fracture surface on the derailer? I think it may be of interest, and some people here could potentially give you some insight based on it.

  2. It is unlikely something just broke like that more likely is something happened or got caught such as a twig etc that caused this chain of events.

Fingers crossed you get some good news

    Did your chain break?

Maybe you caught a stick and it was gone by the time you stopped?

    Check your cassette.

  4. Well, if your insurance only covers it in case of a crash, you know what must be done. Good luck my man.

Makes a person want to switch to titanium. Saw a Blackheart last week, damn sexy bike. Incredible what aero-like shapes they can achieve with the material nowadays.

Hopefully Canyon does crash replacement for a discounted frame, that usually doesn’t require an actual crash.

I don’t think there’s anything particular other than exposure to the elements that causes that sort of derailleur failure, although it does happen on rare occasions. Unfortunately, I have seen quite a few Canyon frames react like this even to minor things.

Professional carbon repair is also always an option.

I’ve had exactiy the same thing happen to mine – 380km into a 500km ride at 2am in the morning 😩. Rear mech snapped off the hanger under load straight into the chain stay and embedded itself in it, and the non drive side seat stay cracked under the stress. Insurance wrote it off – I did enquire about getting it repaired, but wasn’t economical due to the age of the frame.

  8. This has happened to me before. The frame broke because a rear derailleur hanger broke and got sucked by the wheel.

It was a crash. You just had the bike handling skills to not get road rash. Seriously.

  10. All i heard was that you had all the evident components of a crash, with your frame cracked in four places and that survived with your life intact

File this incident on saferproducts.gov. Report the model number involved. At least you can make Shimano file a report with CPSC.
