I was so intrigued by Chris Spargo’s video about walking in Britain’s Weirdest City that I decided to see if I could cycle around it on cycle paths alone. Welcome to Milton Keynes.

  1. I don’t wish to be rude but I’m a little confused.
Did you drive from your home county(which is quite nice) just to ride a bike through Milton Keynes??
Sorry if I missed something 🙂

  2. I live in mk kit it would of been hilarious to see you up here , I'd have fallen off my bike most likely 😂… It used to better for cycling than what it is currently, it's become more dangerous and is a hotspot for bike thieves now unfortunately.. also a lot of those 'green spaces' are rapidly disappearing under development.

  3. I spent some time in Milton Keynes some years ago. I admired the planning. Later I lived in Irvine, California, another planned community. But the company that managed Irvine felt they were not making enough money so they changed from single family homes to large housing blocks. The traffic in Irvine overwhelmed the planned street layout. I always wondered how the planned approach worked out for Milton Keynes. Thank you for the ride around. At least the cycle ways still look to be enjoyable.

  4. I live in Livingston, just outside Edinburgh. It’s EXACTLY like this. A soulless new town, instead of a high street and traditional corner shops and pubs there’s a massive shopping centre (you park in a multi-story car park to go to your local post office) but weirdly… it’s also nice. They’ve thought about it when they planned it. You can cycle everywhere. There are bridges to cross over and under all the roads (some people find going under the bridges at night a little scary and complain that it isn’t safe), there are little wooded areas between every housing estate and sort of forest/ gravel paths through them. All the paths look the same, and it’s easy to become disoriented if you’re not familiar with a certain area because it looks just the same as every other part of the town.
What’s weird is that while it’s a fairly pleasant experience I can’t recommend it. It’s not bad; don’t get me wrong. And certainly don’t be put off living in these towns if that’s what you’ve got to do, but also… it’s a commuter town. Nothing happens. It has no life. It doesn’t feel very British. I’ve always felt safe and I love that I can get about safely by bike, but as a town to live in it’s just a bit… meh.

  5. I live a couple of miles from Irvine in Ayrshire. Very similar cycle paths everywhere. Although many are in a bad state the council are making improvements to them. I use them a lot. Irvine was an existing small town with old buildings in the centre, the new builds are further out and most of the shopping is in a fairly condensed area. There are very few traffic lights!

  6. Interesting to see – I've been a few times. It's sterile ifaic. Municipal managed green area aren't natural. It's primarily for ease of vehicle & bike travel, which it achieves.

  7. I cycle on the redways in Milton Keynes mainly Olney to shenley and find it better than the roads,l know all those routes ,the Belvedere is the steep bit at. End in Campbell park

  8. Hi Kit, certainly a different place to ride but it looked really good. Have to say my only experience of MK was taking my son to County swimming championships there. Roundabouts and a boiling hot venue for a weekend! 😅
