This sub randomly popped up a week or so ago and I been scouring my area for a cheap bike to build up. I live in the Portland Metro Area and it feels like everyone bikes here so they tax like a mf lol Was somehow able to score this Rock Hopper for $50 – not sure of year, but the bike is in super decent condition. Previous owner said it was sitting for years and the tires have weird cracking in em, so figure that’s the first thing to swap out! Would love any advice on what to clean(recommendations for cleaners, oils and such) and what parts(please recommend brands)I should switch out asap if they look concerning. Super excited to ride a bike for the first time in decades, I started skating as soon as I hit 7 lol

My first bike as a adult was a Dyno 20 inch wheel Bmx. It was fun and reminded me of my childhood.
But I quickly realized doing tricks wasn’t really my thing. But going far and exploring was more fun.
After riding 90 miles on a Bmx and almost dying. I quickly bought a mountain bike as well lol.
Great score.
I dislike specialized on a personal level but that age rockhopper is a fantastic frame made from good steel. That can outlive all of us easily, if treated half decent.
For part swaps and upgrades I’d recommend taking it for some rides first and seeing what you come up with, like…
Having my backpack on sucks and I wanna get groceries, so maybe a rack, maybe you want a bag to carry your lock and some patches, if it rains a lot and you ride in the rain, fenders, grippier pedals? How is your body position. Do you feel too hunched and get numb wrists, does your butt hurt after a couple of miles.
Observation is always first in the process of improvement.
I can’t see anything wrong with the bike as is. Actually looks like it’s in great shape.
If you have a bike coop or bike kitchen, or so, in town, maybe ask them what they think of tires and cables, that’s stuff you might want to replace after it’s been sitting for years, but it looks good to me, for your first 100+ miles.
Have fun and welcome back to an amazing community and way of exploring the world
Para mí está preciosa la bici ,broo felicitaciones y a disfrutar del deporte o pasatiempo.as lindo de todos la bici, saludos desde Paysandú Uruguay
Only thing I gotta say is——I don’t like those tires. I get a lot of flat on them, and they are terrible traction on dirt too. Might as well go full knobbies.
But tires are easily replaceable
