Hey everyone, I have a question. I bought a used bike that the seller described as being in good working order. Everything seemed to be functioning correctly at first, but then the crankset started to develop some play.
I’ve had the bike for a month and I’ve ridden less than 80km on paved roads, but as soon as I took it off-road, the looseness appeared. After getting home, I noticed that the splines are dented and look polished.
My question is: if I bought a bike described as fully functional and I haven't done anything to the crank other than checking for play by hand, could I be at fault here? Personally, I suspect the seller might have already been having issues with this crankset before the sale.

  1. More than likely a loose bolt just got even more loose over time. Just nip it up tighter and use loctite maybe.

You’ve probably done the damage unknowingly while riding loose. Bolts come loose and you should check them every now and then
