Hi all,

So a couple of years ago my daughter asked for a new bike. I set about searching for a 24” wheel kids bike that would suit her requirements and struggled. The only bikes I could find that seemed well built with decent kit were very masculine, which she didn’t like.

I asked her “if you could have any bike you wanted, what would it be like?”

She told me that it would have disk brakes, suspension and be purple.

“Purple?” I asked

“Yes, metallic purple, but not shiny.” She said.

Knowing immediately that I was never going to find that (as I didn’t eve believe that colour existed) I decided to build a bike with her, to her requirements.

She’s grown quite a lot since then and during a 6 1/2 hour ride with the family on Monday, we realised that it won’t be long at all before she’s on an XXS or XS adults bike ☹️

So here’s the bike that her and I built 🥰

It’s an Orbea MX24 which was stripped to the bare metal and rebuilt from the ground up with all new bearings, pressed headset and a Shimano Hollowtech 2 bottom bracket installed to open up options for cranks and a 1x drivetrain. The forks were also rebuilt and set up to her weight (about 4-stone 😌)

Orbea MX24
Shimano M6000 1×10 drivetrain
Shimano Hollowtech 2 bottom bracket
128mm crankset
Raceface Ride pedals
Shimano M400 hydraulic disc brakes
SR Suntour 63mm kids Air Fork
KMC Extra Light Chain
HUP Kids lock on grips
Autohaux 35mm stem
Upanbike kids 600mm handlebar
Schwalbe Billy Bonkers dirt jump tyres
New semi-integrated headset
Selle Royal Explora kids saddle
Finished in satin metallic violet

As you can see by the crank length, bar width, grips, fork setup, saddle etc, this bike has been built from the ground up for a child – to be comfortable and usable by a child and she has loved it a lot!

The stickers are all external so can be peeled off and replaced – we do have spares of most of them 🙂

As you can imagine, we want to keep the bike for sentimental reasons and I know we will lose money on it if we sell it but since I know she will be needing a new bike in the next year or so, I may as well ask you kind folks for your opinions, as I’m genuinely torn as to what to do.

Sorry for the long-winded post and thanks in advance for the help.

Lick your finger and hold it up to gage the wind…. You’re still just making guess. Custom build are particularly hard on the used market.

I’d start at ~60% of what you paid for everything and expect to get a little less than that.

If you’re feeling sentimental…. Keep it. It’s unlikely it will be worth as much you anyone else as it is to you.

Maybe convert it to a single speed for the dirt jump/pump track?

I have no idea what’s it’s worth, I do know you can’t really put a value on the memories you have with your kids!!

By the way that’s an absolutely amazing color!! If don’t mind what color is it called?

You can always keep it and turn it into a wicked small dj rig. Could be cool.

Granted I can’t imagine it’d get that much use, but it’d still be a novelty thing to have.

Awesome build 👌🏻 love the fork decals 🤣
Yup, time to sell it to another rad dad. I’d list it for $1100 CAD in my area and I’d be prepared to accept less than $1k. Despite being a sweet custom bike, it’s quite similar to a stock RM Growler, for example, which are sitting on the buy n sell in my area for weeks listed at $800.

    Hard to tell

Kids bikes can hold their value a bit better than adults bikes tbh

I would start at like 50% of what you paid for it and lower it until you start getting messages

  6. I’ve been building up kids bikes for fun with old 26er and BMX parts. My 11 yo has a pretty sweet 24” right now, but not as new or as well done as yours.

It’s a beautiful bike and very well executed, but it’s pretty niche. I’d probably start at like $475-$525 and settle for like $350ish. Realistically, it’s worth more than that and it certainly cost more to build, but the used bike market is pretty soft right now.

  7. That bike is awesome. You should be proud of the build. Like everyone else, kids bikes price oddly. They hold low end value well due to demand but I also feel like they top out quickly as kids grow and parents don’t want to put too much into them. That’s fairly high end for kids bikes. I like the idea of pricing it off of what a new similar build would cost and adjusting for used. If you are looking for a new bike for your kid you might get more value offering trade especially since you can work (like $600 plus a 26” frame that they have etc)

I am a straight white make in his 30s and I am drooling over that frame color. You are a great dad and now you can build me a bike.

    Purple. Metallic, but not shiny.

Good bike, looks awesome too. Orbea bikes have very high liquidity, and they always come with superb equipment. My son’s 20 inch Laufey has a good fork, Shimano groupset and brakes, and schwalbe tires.
