  1. Which gear did you ride in? Did it happen while shifting?

Two weeks ago, a large piece of wood did a similar thing to my XT derailleur.

  2. Was this assembled by a shop? Either way, I would wager hanger wasn’t straight and it got sent into the spokes, wheel kept turning, der got chewed up and spat out.

Likely due to extreme bad luck with a stick getting caught in there or it was never properly assembled and the derailleur got caught in the spokes

  4. Have been that. Hanger is bent a bit, chain gets stuck in the derailleur, you push and snap it, it gets in the wheel and bends few spokes…and you carry the bike home.

To answer you question requires knowing what you were doing at the time. Shifting front derailleur, rear derailleur, both simultaneously? If you were shifting, did you let up on the pedal pressure? Likely it a combination of improper shifting while not easing up on your oedal pressure, combined with an improperly adjusted drivetrain. Either way, you’re going to need a new rear derailleur, derailleur hanger & possibly a new chain. Visit your local bike shop; please don’t attempt this fix yourself. Otherwise you might tear up your frame or rear wheel the next time. Good luck!

The first placement of the chain behind the cogs in the first image makes me think poorly calibrated derailleur/upper limit screw

  7. If you are talking about bringing it to a shop to have the new derailleur installed, you should bring it now to get a full estimate.

You will need a new derailleur hanger (the part of the frame the derailleur mounts to), the derailleur itself, usually chain links get bent when this happens, the derailleur cable is kinked and should be replaced, and the wheel should be inspected. In many cases several spokes are damaged, and in the most severe cases the rim can even be damaged.

It’s a very expensive mistake! I hope you can get everything sorted out and riding again.

  8. Hurts to see.. a 10 second check would have spared you a derailleur. Alwaysalwaysalways check derailleur adjustment on a new bike.
