Ok round 2. Found this trek that needs at least the tires checked or replaced (700x23c, maybe good to replace with 25s anyways?). Posted for $150 but says that he’d take trades or best offer since they don’t know much abt it. Seller measured the frame and it’s around 27.5” (I’m 5’11” so ~57cm should be a fine size, right?).

Would this be a good bike option? Any suggestions on a good offer price if so? Ideal usage is riding around the city to explore, maybe workouts, and some commuting when weather is nice. Will definitely check it out in person before buying to make sure the frame isn’t falling apart.

  1. Looks like a ’95, so over 30 years old. Check the size, looks like a 58cm which would be a bit big for 5’11”. A lot of these older frames can’t fit larger tires, the height will be a problem often contacting the brake calipers.

I wouldn’t pay much for it, there are a ton of potential places problems could be hiding on an older bike like this in unknown condition.

  2. Lugged carbon fiber commonly has problems with the joint failing. Might be fine as a second bike for occasional riding. carbon fiber can make the bike look fancier than it is making it a target for theft.

I generally don’t trust carbon this old. Unlike aluminum and steel, where you can see signs. Carbon is fine until it’s not

I bought one a few years ago for around $200 to take off the parts for another project. Put frame on marketplace and some one bought it.
