I tackle Rooley Moor Road (The Cotton Famine Road) in Rochdale. This is a legendary 5-mile stretch of “serious chunky gravel” that most people say requires a mountain bike. Iβm taking my 32mm Panaracer Gravelkings (which are nearly worn out!) to see if we can make it to Bacup without a major mechanical.
Built in the 1860s by out-of-work mill workers during the American Civil War, this road is a monument to solidarity. We hunt for the remains of the isolated Moorcock Inn, navigate the “original cobbles,” and battle the lingering winds of Storm Dave. Itβs 1,600ft of climbing on a very windy afternoon – some call it under-biking, I just call it a Sunday.

That chain drop at the end (14:39) was the perfect Pennine finish!
Does anyone else brave these old famine roads on narrow tires, or am I the only one mad enough to try? Let me know below!
I take my flat cap off to you, excellent video and your sense of adventure is inspirational. If you got on a full suspension mtb who knows where you'd end up?π I ride the Pennine Bridleway in Wycoller on a hybrid bike with 35 mm tyres and I get some funny looks π
The fact you have a mountain bike yet still chose to use the gravel beast shows true commitment! I bet your bike appreciated the smooth gravel more than you.
Also it was an mx 5 π
been up there its a killer of a hill and road nice one mate
Great video Peter ππ΄π»
