Good morning,
I am totally ignorant when it comes to bikes. In a a nutshell, our kid who is 8 just got a brand new MB. Naturally she wants to ride with me, so I’ve been doing some shopping on marketplace.
I want to buy something used that will last. Not planning on doing anything crazy. Just some light trails and cruising around.
Both of these bikes are $400. The one is a Giant Talon 4 that was barely ridden. The other is a Scott Aspect 950.
Are these fairly priced? Which me should I consider? Thank you in advance!

No they’re not.
Bikes should be sized to your height, and for the sake of not knowing you. General knowledge, Most bikes are made for men. The geometry isn’t necessarily ideal for a lady rider. There are some brands who make bikes focused on the stature of a lady. So depending on who you are take those into consideration when purchasing something for yourself.
the giant new isn’t much more than their asking price and that bike shown is a 2017. Not too familiar with the Scott but they’re on the google box for $450 new. A persons lack of maintenance for the age of bike can become a safety hazard. Please find a local shop near you that you can speak with someone in person. Sales happen often, they can work within your budget, sometimes they know of a well taken care of used bike that would fit your needs. And it’s always good to know where to go and who to speak with when you need work done or parts or gear. The MTB community is a lovely group who only wants more people to experience how rad the trails are and I’ve never met a grumpy or rude person unwilling to help someone gain knowledge of the sport/lifestyle.
Are they both the same size and do they both fit you?
They’re very similar, so you could really go with either one. I’d try to knock the price down another $50 though.
I should’ve clarified. I’m a dude and I’m 6 feet tall lol.
Can’t tell if the Scott has cable disc brakes or hydraulic. But the Scott looks way cooler
The giant has hydraulic brakes. Not sure I’d pay more than $250 though for either.
In my opinion the second one is better. It looks to have slightly better parts, and I think it’s better looking.
Neither one of those bikes are worth $400 at this point unless they were being sold at a bike shop with some kind of warranty. Maybe $250 but you should be looking at a Large or XL. Fit is critical or you won’t want to ride or you’ll have joint pain.
If this is usd neither should be priced at 400
I‘d go with the Scott since it still has the original saddle and not some comfy aftermarket thing that doesn’t belong on a sports bike.
Spec wise they look very similar. But prices are way to high. You can get a brand new Scott Aspect 950 with 29″ wheels for 600 according to Google shopping.
I just went through this same thing. Kids just got Trek Precalibers (20 and 24) and I wanted to join them.
Based on my searches, those should be $200-$250 max on the used market.
This is also a good time of the year to visit your local bike shop in search of trade ins.
I ended up finding a 2008 Specialized FSR XC Pro for $250 in ready to ride condition.
