I got into cycling this year because after my wife got pregnant, I started doing a different fitness challenge every year to stay healthy. I wanted to be a good role model for my son.
He’s 1.5 now, and I ended up falling in love with cycling. The problem is I’m not rich, and this hobby gets expensive fast. I bought a used bike and slowly saved up for stuff over time. Eventually I bought a trailer so I could tow my son around, and recently I bought my wife a used Specialized Diverge so we could ride together as a family.
We literally only got to do one family ride together around Griffith Park and the LA River.
Today I went down to the bike storage in my “secure” apartment building and my wife’s bike was gone. The thief even left some of their tools behind. I had one of the better Kryptonite locks too, and apparently it still wasn’t enough.
Honestly I just feel defeated. I was really excited to share this hobby with my wife and do something healthy together as a family, and now it just feels ruined. That bike was a lot of money for us.
I know it’s probably long gone already, but I’m filing a police report anyway. Has anyone else dealt with this before?
Edit:
Thankfully we have renters insurance. I’ll have to store the bikes in my apartment from now on but with typical LA living we don’t have much space. With a baby and all, storage is a luxury for us, with strollers, car seats, etc. My wife gets stressed out from the clutter which is why I was originally stoked with the secured bike area.

The police will not do anything about it unfortunately. But if you’re renting, it should be covered under your renters insurance.
See if the building has security footage
Sorry mate. that sucks. Yeah def check out the renters insurance. might be covered. Also did you register your bike when you bought it?
My condo got hit for ~$20k of bikes (mostly nice mountain bikes, 5 or 6 bikes total) in under 5 mins. They used an angle grinder to get in and cut everything super fast between 2-3am. Luckily none of mine got stolen and my wife thinks I’m less crazy for keeping them in the living room.
Always store your bike in your apartment. There are great racks that lean against a wall and hold two bikes. If your building gives you grief, point out that a bike was stolen from their secure room
I’ve lived a lot of places. When I lived in Long Beach is when I had the most of my bike stuff stolen.
I’ve had whole bikes stolen. I had had people just steal my components. I even had people just straight demolish my bike while it was locked up.
That sucks man…. i’d advize you to start storing your next bike in your apartment from now on.
For the future, if you have to keep it outside, never lock to anything thinner than your U-lock. Not surprised they got through the U-line Special rack, that truly looks like garbage.
Such a bummer. Sorry it happened to you. Hope there’s surveillance cameras.
Go to your local community bicycle space
wow i’m so sorry that happened 🫶🫂
Fuck thieves!
Sorry to hear man that really is a bummer. Try not to get too down about it you saved for it once you can do it again, yall had a good little collection going in less then 2 years time your boy has a lot of life left I bet in less then a year you guys can have her a new bike and he won’t even remember the down time. A bike I thought I’d have forever was stolen from me when me and my wife first started dating and getting in to biking together, I’d already had it all through college and just got it fitted out with all new components. I didn’t want to ride for a long time but we recently got back into it and I’m upset I ever stopped.
