I cycled UAE, Oman and Saudi Arabia last season. The best riding is unpaved routes: random wadis along the west side of KSA, and the Bikepacking.com Best of the Western Hajar route in Oman. (And people who have done Jordan praise the Jordan Bike Trail.) I did run into cyclists on thin-wheel bikes who had come across the region on asphalt, and they really missed out on a lot. The main highways are grim.

So, I really encourage you to choose a frame and fork that will let you install wide tires; I rode with 2.6″ Mezcals which were perfect. Also make sure that you get rims that are tubeless-ready. You do not want tubes when there’s not only a lot of thorns off-asphalt, but also tiny truck-wire fragments on the highways that are a guaranteed puncture.

Very nice base in my opinion! Me personally I would run a three by eight with thumb shifters as there is really nothing that could break in a significant way that way. Also I would get some handlebars with something like 23 percent backsweep for comfort. Please post some updates as you build it up!
