O really like the Ortlieb Commuter Backpack for cyclists, as it seems very durable, waterproof and overall solid. However, it has to me one fatal flaw – it has no outside bottle pocket or holder. For me, keeping bottle inside the bag next to my laptop, potentially moving or tilting downwards, is just too much of a risk.

So I wanted to ask – is there a solution for this bag to accommodate holder for water bottle? Are there any similar backpacks (simple, solid, waterproof) but with a bottler holder? Thanks for tips and suggestion!

  1. Been using this backpack for the last two years and it been amazing. No regrets whatsoever. I’ve seen people use the webbing on the back to secure a sleeve to the backpack but it dos not look ideal. According the ortlieb they do not want to attach a bottle holder to the pack as it would affect how they manage the waterproofing which is their priority. As an alternative they suggest to simply put the bottle on your bike 🙂

Why not just get a bottle with a waterproof design, in which case it can go inside the backpack with your stuff?

A Vario at Bever is cheaper and has a bottle pocket outside, but not simple.

I have this same issue with my old af Patagonia black hole waterproof backpack.
Looks like your pack has some outside attachment points, my bag does as well, I ended up buying a neoprene bottle cinch sleeve that I lashed through the attachment points and it’s ugly but it works just fine. I was looking at maybe seeing if I could get the fjallraven kanken wire bottle pocket to attach and look a little nicer than my present setup.
Try searching Water Bottle Attachment for Backpack and you’ll see some options with various sleeve/other attachment points

Had to check what forum we’re on.

I actually don’t take a water bottle for my commute. It’s only a half hour and it’s that much more stuff to manage. My office has a little kitchen, cups, etc.

I also have a climbing pack without side pockets. I found a bottle holster on Amazon and attached it to a shoulder strap. Not sure if I’d like that arrangement on a bike though.

Edit: also it does look like there are some gear loops on the back, so you could rig something that way.
