    I’m guessing you hop off do something to switch which freewheel is engaged and then start riding again.

    That’s the writer Vélocio, inventor of the derailleur. Henri Desgrange, professionally grumpy old man and organizer of Le Tour, derided the derailleur as effeminate and was no fan of de Vivie. They had to wait until he died to ride the hated derailleur in Le Tour, such was his dislike of it.

    Paul de Vivie was awesome, and he has had a huge influence on Jan Heine, among others. He is the father of randonneuring and bike touring and coined the term *cyclo-tourisme*. He was a real OG X-biker, and a spiritual guy, in addition to a man with awesome handlebars.
