The Gorges de la Nesque (Nesque Gorges) is a spectacular and deep canyon carved by the Nesque River in the Vaucluse department of Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, France. This dramatic natural feature runs for approximately 25 kilometers between the villages of Monieux and Méthamis, forming a stunning contrast to the surrounding gentle plateaus of the Comtat Venaissin.
The gorge was formed by the erosive action of the Nesque River cutting through the limestone bedrock of the southern slopes of Mount Ventoux. The sheer cliff faces, which drop up to 400 meters in places, expose distinct geological strata. Today, the river itself is often dry during the summer months, only flowing consistently in the spring and after heavy rains, as much of its water runs underground. The Gorges de la Nesque is part of the Mont Ventoux Biosphere Reserve and is a protected Natura 2000 area, recognized for its rich biodiversity, including nesting sites for golden eagles and peregrine falcons.
The most famous feature of the Gorges de la Nesque is the D942 road, often described as a “balcony road” due to its incredible position clinging to the side of the cliffs. This winding, picturesque route offers breathtaking views and is a popular destination for tourists, motorists, and cyclists. The drive features several short, carved-out tunnels and numerous scenic pull-offs. The most notable viewpoint is the Belvédère de Castellaras, which provides a sweeping panorama of the canyon, culminating in the view of the massive, isolated rock pillar known as the Rocher du Cire. The D942 offers a challenging, yet rewarding, cycling route that serves as an alternative approach to the famous Mont Ventoux climb.
