46M Last weekend I had my first ride on a Academy bought Huffy Granite and fell in love. Monday I got a Trek Roscoe 7 and went on my second ride. Today. Got a little over confident on the last jump of the trail. First run was great! Went back to eat it again, got a little back wheel slide going down a pump hill and it set me up wrong. The helmet did it’s job. Knee pads too. Ribs are sore though. Can’t wait for next ride.

Awesome!! Make sure to buy a new helmet before your next ride
Man I am 13 years younger than you and I already feel too old and fragile to be hitting jumps and gnarly stuff so I give major props to you for sending it!
Just bought the same bike today! Stoked to test it at a 15 mile race tomorrow, not looking forward to the hills, but meh, gotta just go for it sometimes. Tried it out in our yard (forest) and it seems amazing.
If nothing else – you nailed the towel over the tailgate. Same function as some $100 doo dad + an after ride clean up towel. You are already ahead.
43M. I was hitting 2ft drops and feeling good. Felt cute and decided to try a 4ft drop.
Approached too slowly, didn’t commit and used poor technique. OTB, landing on my head… Neck is still sore after one month, but it could’ve been much worse …
New wavecell helmet should have crash replacement assistance if bought at Trek. Hardtails will get you if you forget you have lil to no rear suspension
Nice to know that’s what my helmet looks like when it deforms. That helmet doesn’t have MIPS by the way, it might be worth it to get one with it. I’ve been looking at the Fox speedframe rs. Practice that jump technique!
Bring that helmet to your Trek bike shop – Trek/Bontrager has a 1 year replacement program where, if you crash and the helmet has been compromised, they’ll replace it.
You’ll need proof of purchase, too
If you don’t fall down once and a while you’re not pushing hard enough. Ride fast take chances and remember brakes just slow you down.
Glad your ok, brother.
Get a new helmet and a bike rack.
Glad you’re ok. Helmets are freaking awesome. Looks like that one saved your life.
Glad you’re ok man! I don’t know your history, but I’ve engaged in many action sports over the years and in my experience MTB seems to be the easiest to be over confident with. I think it’s the fact that almost everyone knows how to pedal, stop, turn, control braking and speed on a bike before they touch a trail. Like imagine if everyone who went skiing or snowboarding already knew all of that stuff the first time they went to a ski mountain people would be dying left and right. I also think it’s the bikes are so good now. Modern MTBS are not normal, they’re often billed/sold as “built to handle trails” but they’re not just durable, they’re FAST. Really glad you’re ok and stoked to ride again! Keep it up!
Good on you for getting out and riding! But dude, I say this with love but slow the fuck down. Stay off of the jumps for a few months, learn how to ride the bike first. Put some hours in learning how the bike handles, how to control the traction by shifting your weight, how to steer with your hips instead of your arms, how to actually move your weight through terrain before you get off of the ground.
Yes, it’s tempting to just go for it, but that’s how you break bones. You can’t develop skills while you’re sitting at home in a cast, so take it easy for the first few months at least and get some riding time in before you start to hit features with consequences.
you new helmet could be a full face helmet 😉
I can relate, I’m new to it and mid 40’s as well. My overconfident moment ended with me standing in a shallow abandoned mine shaft stuck in a thistle bush
second ride and you are jumping? Holy over confidence batman. Grow some skill set first buddy.
OTOH, inside of ambulance not pictured so well done! Crashing is learning
I love helmets!
