Just venting, but also a cautionary tale… I got a bill this month from FedEx for $216 for a crankset I bought from Northshore Billet (I'm in the US) last year. Obviously, this is fucking ridiculous. In case anyone still hasn't figured it out, us regular people are the ones who end up paying these tariffs – sometimes indirectly because the importer already paid it and passed the cost on to their customers, and sometimes directly (like this) if you buy just about anything from outside the US.
It's wild to me that *consumers* can get hit with fees like this, it's not like everyone is starting their own importing biz. This was already a pricey crankset, with these fees, it's nuts.
Since SCOTUS ruled the tariffs were illegal and there's now a refund site setup, I'm going to try to dodge this bill somehow. It'll probably negatively affect my credit score in the meantime, which is annoying as hell. I hate to say it, but be careful about where you're shopping unless you're willing to accept massive bills like this.
At the end of the day, my tariff woes are a small problem. I just want to ride my bikes and enjoy life. I'd really like to see us stop causing turmoil all over the world.
A few edits for clarification…

I did not vote for this and have never supported any of this admin's policies.

I am not "learning how things work" – I understand how they work, I'm sharing for the "we're winning, do your own research types."

I was a little caught off guard by the total amount, this order was placed at the end of summer last year, so it's going on 9 months ago, I just got a bill mid April and had forgot about it. At the time it wasn't completely clear how the tariff schedule would be assessed and I don't think a lot of companies/vendors even know as of now, aside from " we send it under X code, you can look up what it might cost" – and even then, probably only if the customer asks.

It appears FedEx has a dispute process, I'm going to look into it. I think for example, the weights are wrong. Each piece is listed as 1kg – these cranks are not 3 kg. Maybe other technicalities to dispute. They are also claiming they will pass refunds along to customers… not holding my breath on that.

Wow, I was just about to order one from them. I did not realize tarrifs from Canada are that bad. It would have been cheaper to drive it across and declare it.
I feel that. I paid $700+ getting my new frame. Naturally I probably will never get that money back from ups.
You were not the importer of record, FedEx is. Since you are not the IOR, nor customs broker (FedEx is both for this case). The entry is also past the effective refund claim period. you are probably SOL. your only outlet is through FedEx themself and, take it from someone who does it for a living, good fucking luck dealing with that
Was not political until I had pay twice for my handlebars. I’m so over this.
Some of y’all voted for this. Anyone who thought tariffs would be payed by anyone other than the consumer were naive.
Are you winning enough yet?
“winning”
The tariff is probably less than half of that, this happened to me with UPS they charge a bunch of money for fees it was more than the tariffs… long story short I refused delivery and stuck them with the bill as a big FU
Just send the bill to Chiienah
You just have to email that address on the fedex form and give them your information and tell them the tariff is illegal. It took me two emails and they eventually dropped it. It’s just a money grab. FedEx knows it’s illegal and are just pieces of shit like our president.
Try to pay it. Bernie says it’s being challenged and not due at this time.
That’s what mine said.
Perfect thing to show all the “leave politics out of this sub it’s not related to mountain biking” people in here. Pair it with the admin also wanting so desperately to pawn off our public land to the highest bidder.
Politics affect every aspect of our lives, and even more so now under this fucking circus administration who’s speedrunning making our lives worse.
Sorry about your country’s leadership and their decisions negatively affecting you. Thank you for supporting what is a really great, small machine shop in BC. They machined the aluminum bits on the original Aenomaly Switchgrade too!
This is exactly what was voted for and what you give trump ongoing implicit consent for so his family can steal the money.
Trump is a piece of tiny dog poop. I have spoken.
Thanks Trump
I got some title parts. UPS got me with 11 bucks.
Trump voters are fucking morons. Trump voters who mountain bike have a cuck fetish.
Send a copy of this to your senators and representatives. Seriously, this is the kind of outrageous shit that is hammering average people’s finances in the US. The tariffs are so moronically complex and ever-changing that it’s impossible to keep track of how they impact purchases. More importantly than that, get out and vote in November.
I imported some Pelican cases from Japan because they had some exclusive colors (Snap-On does this for Japan too), and had to pay a tariff on them. The items were made in California.
Damn it feels good to be a non-us citizen
You sure this is not just a scam? I mean it is a scam, but maybe it’s a proper scam ?
I could see somebody sending these letters out, maybe they even got some info on what you ordered
Question, where did you order from, were you informed of the tariffs before, what happens if you just try to return the item for a refund If they didn’t inform you ahead of time?
If you just order a part from some.com online shop, is there a possibility of this happening, or do you specifically need to order from an international shop from a country that has high tariffs?
Make America Crank Again
Im confused. Just don’t pay it. They didn’t send it to you via registered mail, so you never received this bill
