So my frame is a bsd beverage in clear/raw metal that I have had for 10+ years & in that time it has accumulated rust under the clear coat & in other areas that I think look cool…
Given that I like it I don't want to respray it, but I do want to have some amount of control over how fast it is rusting while keeping the patina look.
Anyway I knew of a easy DIY metal treatment method & decided to try it. I knew it works, but now I have done it myself & have results I thought I would share it because while not everyone has my situation, it is very common for chain stays to take damage & for rust to appear there.
What you need:
– white vinegar
– rags
– paper towels
– cling film/wrap
– tape
Process:
– wrap a paper towel around the tube you want to treat
– soak a rag in white vinegar & wrap around the tube over the paper towels
– wrap the rag & paper towels in clingwrap
– tape the clingwrap at the ends & in the middle so it won't open & leak
– leave for 24 hours then remove
I have included photos of my chain stays, one has been treated & the other is untreated so you can see the difference.

Here’s a picture of when I treated my main tubes so you can see how they were wrapped…
