It's a pity that despite winning everything, FZD's case for the GOAT status is not considered as strong as Ma Long's, Jike's or Waldner's. He dominated everyone in his era except for Ma Long. There's always a player or two against whom even the greats struggle, it was Wang Hao for Ma Long, Ma Lin and Wang Liqin for Waldner. FZD's record against Xu Xin(in his prime) is 14-8 in the singles events and 4-2 against Zhang Jike and he beat prime Jike twice in 2013. Not to mention that he very rarely lost to any non-Chinese players. FZD's backhand, physical strength and explosiveness are always talked about and rightfully so but what people forget to mention is his mentality, he came back from difficult positions multiple times when the national team of China needed him the most. NOTE:- FZD vs Timo is 12-0!!
If FZD had win at the 2021 Olympics Final against Ma Long, the tables might have turned. Ma Long has 2 olympic medals and FZD has 1. He is still young compared to Ma and yet, the Chinese retired them at the same time. What a wrong decision it may cause a non-chinese olympic medalist in 2028.
I think even Ma Long considers FZD the goat. I remembered Adam saying after one of his seminal matches, he spoke to his fan in English because his next opponent (FZD) is really good and he didn’t think he’ll get the chance to speak to them again. WCQ has always been the anti-ML yet never gotten this kind of treatment.
I'm also a fan of Timo but his a little bit biased? Or is it a promotion thing? Every time he asks something about who is the best of something he always picks butterfly athletes.
I mean I believe Timo will always be the one of the greatest and that's his opinion.
