not sure what’s going on here or how to fix it besides trying to throw on an extra washer on the brake pad. The thicker washer is on the brake pad side already. any advice is appreciated. tyia
the bike originally had DX cantis, I got rid of the original quill stem that had a cable stop (now regretting that) and the head tube doesn’t have enough length for an extra cable stop locking nut to install cantis again. I had V brakes on before but put on new rims and now they don’t quite reach. I quess worst case I can put on other rims, but these are MAVIC with LX hubs, and really don’t feel like changing tires again.

Sorry to say but you need to refit your cantis which I am going to assume used post type blocks and not direct mount similar to the V brakes allowing for the spacing. In most but not all cases V brakes can be fitted to replace cantis but you have found one of the cases in not all.
The threaded pads usually have two spacers, one on the pad side and the other on the back of the caliper. They are two different thicknesses.. if that’s the case, move the thinner spacer outboard and the thicker spacer closer to the pad.
