You can cycle from Limehouse in east London to the Greenwich Foot Tunnel north entrance entirely on quiet streets and protected cycle lanes.

The route is 5km long (3.2 miles) and makes use of quiet streets on the Isle of Dogs and part of Cycleway 3

  1. All those chicanes and bumps. That's why as I'm not normally in a hurry, I use the Canary Wharf to Rotherhithe ferry, which is supposed to be getting a new electric boat, much delayed and a much more frequent service. Riding from Rotherhithe and Greenwich uses a lot of the river side barrier free plus the superb Cycleway 4.

  2. Another great video – it seems to have been raining in London. I like your idea of a "proper" national cycle way in the UK – We have national walking routes, horse riding routes, driving routes, why not national cycle routes? Thanks for sharing.

  3. Awww mannn, you changed the "alright, let's get going" to "okay, let's get going"

It's the highlight and signature of all your videos 😀

    Get better soon though dude.

  4. Just so you are aware, you could have joined the Thames pathway slightly sooner than you did (around 2.47). You might not notice if you are cycling past it as it looks a bit like you are cycling through a building. I used to do that route when I worked in the isle of dogs a few years ago. It probably isn't any quicker, but you get a nice view of the river there.

  5. I understand this is a potentially quieter route, but as someone who lived on the Isle of Dogs multiple times.. it feels quite complicated compared to just turning right onto Westferry Road after peeling off the riverside path. It's not that busy a road and the chances of getting hit by a car navigating the backstreets feels as likely, especially given all the construction work going on which confuses cars.

  6. Such a shame to see so many chicanes/barriers, I thought in most places these were being removed for easier access for everyone, ie Trikes, cargo bikes etc. Great video as always.

  7. Reducing the speed limit on narrow single lane rural roads from 60 to 20 mph would go a long way towards creating a national inter-city cycle network and would not cost anything. It would also improve rural pedestrian safety.

  8. Given that invalid carriages are classed as pedestrians, I wonder if those chicanes are discriminatory against the disabled, a protected characteristic under the Equality Act. Is it legal to prevent disabled people from accessing to public spaces?

  9. Hate that tunnel, either one the the lift is close all the time.
they would have had a 'normal' cycle tunnel called silver town tunnel, but then end up just for cars. east side is shit, a real crossing is only the Tower Bridge.

  10. Regarding the cancelled crossing between Canary Wharf and Rotherhithe, it's worth remembering the offering that was made by way of apology—an improved electrified ferry, offering a roll-on roll-off for better accessibility to users of wheeled transport. Was supposed to start running last summer, and launched on a trial basis in December, with the intention of gradually retiring the old diesel ferries. But those old ferries are still providing the bulk of the service.

Oh and it seems that if / when the newer ferry finally assumes full responsibility for the service, it'll still cost £4.10 for a single journey. Which is more than it costs to drive a car across the Silvertown tunnel at peak times.

  11. I'd love to be able to follow your route on Strava or Google maps. Is there any way to get voice directions for a route such as this just like Google maps gives voice directions from A to B?

  12. Great video, although a rather frustrating route with all those chicane barriers! 😁
I've always thought that the building of HS2 could have been a great start to a national cycle "motor" way. Imagine a cycleway running next to the railway all the way to Birmingham with regular junctions off to towns 7 villages along the way1 🙂

  13. A perfect example of so called cycle infrastructure keeping me amongst the traffic. I like flat tarmac, i hate that hill at the start, i don't like to dismount either but to avoid that I do, walk from cable street over the crossing and thru the weird bit to the Thames path & then dismount again for the lift up to canary wharf. I just avoid it really & im deffo never doing this with all the chicanes and bumps. Good to know X

  14. Like the Route 1 route you mentioned, we have the same sort of thing here in the US called US Bike Routes that stretch 100s or 1000s of miles. The vast majority of them are signed routes, some on basically highways, with zero infrastructure. So pointless.

  15. Useful video. Isle of dogs on the other side and closer to Camary Wharf has so many quite dangerous-feeling, roads so nice to see some good ones.

  16. "It would be really cool to have a real national cycle network. Imagine it with high-quality intercity paths." – We can but dream!
