A short while ago I made a video about why you should think twice about moving to Germany. Here, for the sake of balance, is a video about why I am so glad to be living in Germany.

  1. Because this came up in the comments almost as soon as I published this video: No, this has nothing to do with Radical Living's recent video in which he explains all the reasons he's leaving Germany. I started planning this video at the same time I was making the "Why you should think twice…" video, and the timing is pure coincidence.

I don't have a response to his video because it's not a matter of who's right and who's wrong: we have different experiences and different expectations, it would be weird if we didn't come to different conclusions and make different decisions.

  2. Implementing and testing Cell Broadcast is one thing. The way the railway line was reconstructed and newly electrified within just a few years is quite impressive.

  3. In case anyone has seen the Radical Living video on how bad Germany is and why he wants to leave – this here is the perfect antidote. I really like living here and and am glad to call Andrew my fellow citizen!

  4. The UK is doing one thing much better than Germany: If you make the mistake to visit the capital you can leave much quicker.
If you visit Berlin and realize it sucks you are stuck in traffic, a complicated main train station or a miserably connected airport.
In London you have many airports to choose from and at the only high speed track in the UK makes sure you can leave the country asap 😂

  5. I am still not sure if that woman with that car only did play the reverse card. Germans sometimes can be quite convincing in playing out a dead earnest act when it is not suitable just for their own joy.

  6. It’s striking that people from other countries have a much more positive view of Germany. As a German, I’d like to request that this video be made available in German for those grumpy, moaning Germans.

  7. I thought it was just me being negative about the state of British cities – they are often quite vile, even if they do have decent parts. Badly planned, badly maintained, dirty, car-centric, lots of anti-social behaviour with rubbish everywhere. They can be very depressing. German cities, and European cities on the whole, seem to be much better planned, cleaner and with decent infrastructure.

  8. Rumours that Europeans in general are "rude" come from Americans, who feel like they must do small talk with everyone they see throughout their day (Others don't do that, so they get weird looks, or no response at all), or who expect servers to ask them about their day, their plans for tomorrow, their kids, etc. before taking their order.

  9. Despite a lot of complaining about them the Deutsche Bahn managed to electrify the railway line between Ulm and Friedrichshafen/Bodensee (at Lake Constance). They also managed to build an entirely new high speed railway line from Ulm to Wendlingen near Stuttgart.
With estimated costs and time. It's only the city of Stuttgart, home of Mercedes and Porsche, which has a quite persistent problem with the idea of allowing to be reachable by trains.
To spice the task of building a new main railway station up a bit it was turned into the challenge of creating the opposite of a tall TV tower (they have a historical affinity for this). In the course of realising the project they became a bit confused and now it's a huge subterranean labyrinth. At least it has some interesting architectural novelties. So there's still the option of turning it into a subterranean museum of modern architecture and art (SMOMAAA).

  10. I have seen few British towns and cities. I've been in Lerwick and Edinburgh, and I've been in York. Quite nice all of them.

But regarding British cities, there's an old statement by a well-known British gentleman I never would dare to contradict:

'British architects have done more damage to British cities than German bombers.'

Today, this gentleman is known as – Charles III.!

  11. Oh my dear, seems we're bound to get even more Brits. I need to put more money into my beer invests
Be aware that we now test our warning systems two times a year and find ways to put early warning systems in more and more devices. So two times a year, all phones ring, beep vibrate, sirenes go off, TV switches on, cars honk, the landlord rings, birds knock your window (you are aware that birds aren't real, aren't you?) Sometimes they also go off for know reason (in the whole city!) We have plenty of rain, too, in winter most people are ill-tempered (winter means from September to April). And the rent is unreasonably high. You will immediately feel at home.
Also, we always appreciate a nice chat with folks from oter countries who shared our destiny of voting for stupid politicians! (though, there are a few other countries who get much closer to our historic high mark of stupidity, you are ony mediocre.) If you write it down or are able to switch into American pronunciation, we will even understand you. (But, please stay on the right side of the street.)

  12. I think, comparing the railway systems of Germany and Britain is comparing the 2 worst railway systems of all European high-income countries. Others like Austria and particularly Switzerland might not raach the same speeds as Germany, but they still have high-speed lines (over 200 km/h) and their trains run mostly on time and are generally reliable (except the ones coming from Germany of course).
