  1. I used the Velo Orange adapter without issue on an old ATB I used for first road cruising.

I think that Nitto is a reasonably well respected brand.

A quill stem adapter isn’t anything particularly complex that it couldn’t be made by any number of factories quite easily.

Just from looking it up, it’s a pretty high price for what seems to be a pretty basic item. You can get one from [velo orange](https://velo-orange.com/products/vo-threadless-stem-adaptor) for $25. I used that one for years, but sold it with the bike I was using it on.

  3. Would work no question, even cheap adapters work fine it’s not a complex part. I’ve used cheap amazon adapters on beater drop bar bikes for years without issue.

I have a few thousand miles on an Amazon one and it hasn’t budged a millimeter

I’ve used cheap amazon ones without issue, spend your money elsewhere unless you want Nitto branding

  6. I’ve only used origin8 adapters, they work exactly the same for a fraction of the price

Do you trust your stem to clamp? And do you trust your quill stem to wedge properly? They function no differently.

I have used that exact model on my cadex until it got stolen. I really hope it will fail, but I used it for 2-3years without problems.

  9. It works well but bike tech told me to avoid those as much as possible because it’s applying a different force point than a normal quill stem when doing this

Just stay away from the really cheap ones. I’ve had a close call when it snapped while going over cobblestones. Thankfully the screw inside didn’t break which saved be from a bad crash.

You are paying a lot for the Nitto name and knurl. The Prifile Design, Deda or Origin8 are a fraction of the price but still lighter weight and nicer finish than the bottom barrel Aliexpress no names. But there isn’t much to go wrong with any of them, at least no more than any quill stem!

Yes, but why? This solution combines the disadvantages of both systems – quill stem stiffness with bulky ahead stem looks.

I’d just spend the money on a quality quill stem or convert the headset and fork.

  13. Quill stem (and quill stem adapter) failures are very, very rare but they usually result in serious consequences. Use with caution, probably avoid those “sweet jumps” the kids are always on about.

Nitto is over engineered, if it says you can you def can without fear. Follow torque specs and fire away

Nitto makes excellent products. Only issue I had with nitto stem adapters was using one with a Thompson stem. I imagine that because both are top of the line they have really tight tolerances, and with the knurling it made the stem fit REALLY tight and was hard to remove. I had to use a plastic mallet to get it off without a bike to put the stem adapter into. The cheap ones have a much looser fit.

  16. Yeah, they’re real.

If you think about the physics it’s a lot like a quill stem inside the tube, but with an extra coupling (the threadless bit) up top. Since both of those are trusted designs, and there’s not a lot extra to change the forces, send it.

  17. I run one and it’s not a problem. Are you jumping off dirt jumps with your basket bike? If not, then you’ll be fine.

  18. I have no choice but to trust the VO one because the Granolamoose bars are designed around it.

if youre really worried just run spacers underneath the stem same as you would on a steerer tube. Also there is the Velo Orange one which features a flange of sorts.

But yes, I trust anything Nitto, and beyond that, anything Analog deems worthy enough to purvey

  20. negativeyoda on

Would I trust it? As long as you hit the minimum insertion, it’s fine.

That said, those adapters are ugly AF and introduce unnecessary weight and complexity to your cockpit. different diameter quill stems exist, as does the [innicycle.com](http://innicycle.com) headset

I have a very cool Velo Orange quil stem with a removable faceplate if you wanna go a slightly different route and keep that classic aesthetic but still run a modern bar! Can’t go wrong here either way.

Application and loading matter—trust it for what? What kind of riding are you doing over what kind of terrain?

  23. lavabutt4550 on

I’ve heard a lot of good things about the profile design adapter which is around $20 and pretty available. I have one coming in the mail for a bike I’m building

  24. Careful-One5190 on

Do I trust it to not look ridiculous, like all quill-to-threadless adapters? No I do not – it will definitely ruin the looks of the bike, and brand you as a Fred.

  25. Worromot_Oink on

I have one on my fixie and I ride it hard af.

Just make sure it’s tight enough that your bars don’t misalign when you hit a big bump. I actually replaced the aluminum wedge on mine for a generic steel one because it grips better from my experience.

With drops on tarmac or decent gravel, yes 100%. Throwing myself around on a trail, I’d probably get the Nitto quill bull moose.
