Join us for a ride through the Forest of Dean as we head down to the River Severn at Purton, exploring the remains of the old Severn Railway Bridge and the railway that once crossed the estuary.
Starting out on quiet lanes, the route winds its way through several Forest villages before descending towards the river.
Along the shoreline at Purton, sections of the old railway can still be found, including parts of the approach viaduct, with distant views across the Severn where the bridge once stood.
The Severn Railway Bridge, completed in 1879, was severely damaged in 1960 after two barges, battling strong currents in heavy fog, collided with one of the columns, causing a partial collapse of the bridge. The barges, one carrying oil and the other petroleum, ignited, and five people died. The bridge was later dismantled, leaving only traces of what was once an important crossing.
Some of the remains can still be seen, and at low tide, the wreckage of the two barges that caused its collapse becomes visible in the estuary.
This ride combines cycling with a bit of hike-a-bike, along with a glimpse into the Forest of Dean’s industrial past, where nature has slowly reclaimed what remains.

Nice to see you guys out on the bikes again in this lovely area you live in . A video popped up on my feed a week or so ago about the new version of the tyre glider and it made me think about getting one – I struggle with some of my tyres on my old mountain bike rims so this would be very useful ! Cheers 😊
Happy to see you experienced the sheer joy that is the newly surfaced Blakeney Road – and then back to the craters in tarmac as you approach Parkend 😢. By the way, that gate was locked as you weren’t on the footpath – there was probably a stile onto the road further down the field.
So magical 🤩
Oh I sooooo want to hear you say the F-WORD without the (beep) 😉
Great scenery and video guys. Toms enthusiasm level definitely peaked when the Brisket came out
